Noel Tata, 67, has been a key figure within the Tata Group for over two decades.

Noel Tata has been appointed Chairman of Tata Trusts, one of India’s most influential philanthropic organisations, following the passing of his half-brother, Ratan Tata. The decision was made during a board meeting held in Mumbai by the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Ratan Tata, a towering figure in Indian business and former Chairman of Tata Sons, passed away earlier this week at the age of 86 after a period of illness.

Noel Naval Tata, Chairman, Tata Trusts, said, "I am deeply honoured and humbled by the responsibility that has been cast on me by my fellow Trustees. I look forward to carrying on the legacy of Mr. Ratan N. Tata and the Founders of the Tata Group. Founded more than a century ago, the Tata Trusts are a unique vehicle for undertaking social good. On this solemn occasion, we rededicate ourselves to carrying on our developmental and philanthropic initiatives and continuing to play our part in nation-building."

Ratan Tata’s death marks the end of an era in Indian industry. Under his leadership, the Tata Group transformed from a family-run conglomerate into a global business powerhouse. During his tenure as Chairman of Tata Sons from 1991 to 2012, and then again between 2016-17, the company significantly expanded its international footprint, with landmark acquisitions such as Jaguar Land Rover and Corus Steel. He was widely admired for his ethical approach to business and his commitment to philanthropy through Tata Trusts, which manage the majority of Tata Sons’ shareholding.

Ratan Tata was born in 1937 into a prominent Parsi family in Mumbai. Following the divorce of his parents, Naval and Sooni Tata, when he was 10 years old, he was raised by his grandmother, Lady Navajbai Tata.

Noel Tata, 67, has been a key figure within the Tata Group for over two decades. He takes over as Chairman of Tata Trusts after holding several significant roles across the group’s various companies. Most notably, Noel served as Managing Director of Tata International Ltd, the group’s trading and distribution arm, from 2010 to 2021. Under his leadership, Tata International grew from a $500 million turnover to more than $3 billion.

He also played a critical role in expanding Trent Ltd, Tata's retail arm, which grew from a single store in 1998 to over 700 outlets under his direction. Noel currently holds the positions of Vice Chairman of Tata Steel and watch company Titan, continuing to influence the group's strategic operations.

Educated in the UK at Sussex University and later at INSEAD, where he completed an International Executive Programme, Noel is well-regarded for his disciplined and thoughtful approach to leadership. His mother, Simone Tata, a French-Swiss national, was instrumental in shaping the Tata Group’s consumer business, particularly in the founding of Lakme, India’s first cosmetics brand. She is currently the Chairperson of companies such as Trent, Tata International, Tata Investment Corporation, and Voltas.

Tata Trusts is the overarching body that oversees the charitable activities of the 14 Tata Trusts, which together hold a controlling interest in Tata Sons. The Sir Ratan Tata Trust and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust alone own over 50 per cent of Tata Sons, making them pivotal in the group’s governance. The trusts are involved in philanthropic activities across a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, education, rural development, and environmental sustainability.

Noel Tata steps into his new role with the support of the Tata Trusts’ executive committee, which includes Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh, and Mehli Mistry. These individuals have been responsible for steering the trust’s strategic direction in recent years.
