The OnePlus Open has reportedly been delayed multiple times, while other Chinese companies like Samsung and Oppo launched foldable phones. Liu acknowledged the delays in an exclusive chat with The Verge, saying OnePlus wanted to perfect the technology before launch.
"To be honest, we've been thinking about launching a foldable for a while. We spent the last two years researching and developing prototypes, and we wanted to launch it earlier. However, in early stages, we met technical challenges," Liu said.
He added that OnePlus didn't want to rush to market with an unfinished product. Interestingly, Oppo chief Pete Lau recently confirmed that the OnePlus Open is essentially a rebranded Oppo Find N3. Both companies are launching what's essentially the same foldable phone for different markets.
With the OnePlus Open, the company will compete directly with Samsung's dominant foldable phones. Liu is confident that the OnePlus Open will set new standards, saying it "will bring the foldable experience to new heights."
The OnePlus Open has been the talk of the tech town for quite some time. As per trusted tipsters and the latest WinFuture leak, the OnePlus Open features a 7.8-inch foldable OLED screen sourced from BOE and folds out to a 6.3-inch Cover screen.
Powering the OnePlus Open is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage.
The camera system on the OnePlus foldable has been tuned by Hasselblad and is headlined by a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera and a 64MP telephoto camera.
Pricing and availability details of the OnePlus Open are still under wraps. But with the launch date set for October 19, all details should be revealed soon.
