The RE Flying Flea kickstarts an all-new electric journey for the iconic Indian brand.

Royal Enfield has finally taken the wraps off its first electric bike, the Flying Flea. Unveiled as a flagship model with the suffix C6, this fully electric roadster is the first of the several Royal Enfield Flying Flea electric bikes that will come in the future. The debut bike is also a tribute and pays homage to the motorcycles manufactured by RE during the World War days, which were also called Flying Flea. So, having a light, simple modular architecture was one of the prerequisites of making the past bikes. The same philosophy has continued here, too, albeit in a slightly different avatar with a hint of sophistication.

Yes, the Royal Enfield Flying Flea C6 looks quite, pardon for the lack of words, “compact”. A word that never comes up whenever you’re talking about Royal Enfield motorcycles. But the Royal Enfield Flying Flea is a unique proposition, and being compact is just one of its highlights. In its electric avatar, the RE Flying Flea is heavier than its ancestors and it has been proposed to be around 100 kg. Coupled with that eye-catching girder fork suspension, it looks sophisticated, too. In fact, the Flying Flea is the only electric motorcycle in the world to employ a girder fork unit. The rest of the bodywork looks quite classy and evokes the overall retrol style in unmistakably Royal Enfield. Holding that beautifully sculpted body is that forged aluminium frame which further help keep the weight under check.

Keeping matters mysterious and yet very attractive is the battery chamber. Characterised by fins, like the ones you’d notice on the LiveWire S2 Del Mar and S2 Mulholland. However, RE has not revealed the battery’s specifications hiding behind it. Aside from the fact that this will be a city bike was something that the brand’s chief growth officer of EVs, Mario Alvisi, clarified. However, the range for the bike is somewhere in the ballpark of around 160 km that RE is targetting. While charging time is still not revealed, the company did say that the electric Royal Enfield can be charged via a domestic 3-pin plug. Beyond that, there were slight anecdotes of being a nimble and agile ride to satiate the curiosity as to how the bike would feel while riding, but the unofficial top speed doing the rounds was 115 kmph.

The Royal Enfield Flying Flea C6 boasts quite a premium list of features. It gets a single-pod TFT touchscreen, but the UI will be completely different from the one seen on the Himalayan 450. Royal Enfield has already filed patents for 28 new technologies just surrounding the cluster. Along with that, the full suite of cornering ABS, traction control, cruise control, etc will debut with the Flying Flea C6 for Royal Enfield. Additionally,  RE also claims that there are over 2 lakh different customisable ride modes possible!

Alongside the Royal Enfield Flying Flea C6, the brand also gave us a glimpse of the second model as part of the Flying Flea range. It will be a scrambler derivative of the roadster and will be called the Royal Enfield Flying Flea S6. It will ride on aluminium spoke wheels, get a conventional USD fork instead of a girder fork, be quicker from 0-60 kmph, and even have an enduro-inspired long seat.

Speaking about what Royal Enfield brings to the Flying Flea and to electric mobility, Siddhartha Lal, Managing Director, Eicher Motors Ltd., said: “Ever since the wheels began turning in 1901, Royal Enfield has been an ally for exploration and pure motorcycling experiences for millions of riders. For more than 123 years now, as Royal Enfield has evolved with time, emerged through challenges and grown to be a global motorcycling brand, our mission of pure motorcycling has been preserved and nurtured, and has become our true-north. Today, as we get ready to script a new chapter for Royal Enfield, this mission has been the driving force and inspiration and is the link between Royal Enfield and the Flying Flea, our new brand for super fun, gorgeous and enjoyable urban-plus mobility. This is a significant step in our evolution as a brand and an opportunity for us to distill the essence of Royal Enfield DNA combined with all the great benefits of EV technology and bring something absolutely delightful and differentiated to the world of city-plus mobility.”
