Tata doubles down on expanding automatic offerings as it seeks to reclaim ground in the hatchback segment.
Tata Motors is preparing to expand the powertrain options of the recently launched Altroz facelift by introducing an AMT gearbox with the CNG variant—a move that could materialise in the coming months. While the CNG-AMT combination was absent at launch, a Tata spokesperson confirmed to Acko Drive that the option is indeed in the pipeline, even though Tata has yet to officially announce the timeline.

The Altroz facelift, which retains the choice of petrol, diesel, and CNG from its predecessor, has already introduced a new Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) paired with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The same engine powers the CNG variant, and Tata already offers an AMT-CNG configuration in the Tiago and Tigor. Extending this setup to the Altroz appears to be a logical next step.

Tata Motors remains the only carmaker in India to offer factory-fitted CNG variants with automatic gearboxes. In a market where most CNG offerings are limited to manual transmissions, this gives Tata a distinct edge, especially among urban buyers looking for convenience without compromising on lower running costs.

The Altroz CNG continues to use the 1.2-litre Revotron engine, producing the same 72 bhp and 95 Nm of torque as the Tiago and Tigor CNG. It will also retain the practical dual-cylinder CNG tank layout that debuted on the pre-facelift Altroz CNG, which preserves boot space—an area where most CNG cars fall short.

At the launch of the Altroz facelift, Sailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., acknowledged that nearly 70 per cent of Altroz customers are first-time car buyers. Importantly, around a quarter of them opt for automatic variants. “We thought that for somebody who wants to experience automatic for the first time, AMT is a good option because it’s cost-effective,” Chandra said. “We have seen a decent penetration of AMTs in this segment.”
