The Tata Altroz is a premium hatchback with a cutting-edge exterior design, practical cabin and peppy performance. The hatchback looks sporty from the outside and comes with a fair amount of equipment on the inside. Although the Altroz sports a radically aggressive design, the overall silhouette remains that of a conventional hatchback. Apart from its sporty design, it is also one of the safest hatchbacks in the country, with an impressive 5-star safety rating from the Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) crash tests.
The Tata Altroz is available with three engine choices: a 1.2-litre petrol, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The engines offer a peppy performance, especially the turbo-petrol variant. The Altroz offers a mix of sporty looks, a premium interior and superior performance. The compact dimensions of the hatchback make it easy to drive. If you are in the market for a sporty premium hatchback, the Altroz is an option worth considering.
The following sections will give you an insight into the exterior design, interior, features, performance and safety of the Tata Altroz.
The Tata Altroz is an aggressively designed hatchback, especially the front fascia. It sports a sharp front grille with sleek headlamps blending seamlessly with the grille. It is designed in such a way that the grille and headlamps form a layer over the front bumper. The bumper also houses LED DRLs and fog lamps. The bonnet features sharp creases, further accentuating the front end's sporty look.
The side profile of the Altroz looks equally sporty as the front end. It features flared wheel arches, contrast-black treatment for the window line, blacked-out B-pillar and ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors), stylish dual-tone alloy wheels and C-pillar mounted door handles. The sharp shoulder line makes the side profile look aggressive and adds character to the hatchback.
The rear profile of the Altroz carries forward the same theme as the front and side profile. It features sharp cuts and creases, which makes for a visual treat. The entire panel housing the sleek tail light cluster is blacked-out and neatly hides the tail lights. When the lights are lit up, it produces an illusion of lights floating over the body. The rear spoiler neatly integrates with the rear windscreen. Overall, the Altroz is a looker. It is probably a hatchback with the best stance, and there is no doubt that it is an attention-grabber when out on the road.
The Altroz’s interior is equally striking as its exterior. The cockpit-inspired theme is evident when you look at the dashboard. It also features a layered design with a distinct colour theme. The prominent highlights of the dashboard include a floating infotainment display, a flat-bottom steering wheel and chrome highlights on the steering wheel, AC vents and inside door handles. There’s also leather treatment for the steering wheel and the gear shift lever.
Coming to the comfort, the first thing you notice is the 90-degree opening doors which make for easy ingress and egress. The wide cabin translates to a comfortable ride even for three occupants in the rear. The rear passengers also get AC vents. There is ample legroom and knee room. However, headroom may be of concern for taller passengers. Overall, the Altroz offers good comfort for rear occupants, and long drives should not be a problem, even with three occupants. The Tata Altroz’s boot space stands at 345 litres, which is good enough even for long drives.
The Altroz is a feature-rich hatchback which comes with all the necessary creature comfort features. It includes cruise control, a floating infotainment display, rear AC vents, a TFT digital instrument cluster, voice recognition, automatic headlamps, ambient lighting, a cooled glovebox, an engine start/stop button, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, etc. All-in-all, the Altroz has an expansive list of features.
The Tata Altroz comes with three engine options: a 1.2-litre petrol and a turbo-petrol engine, and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine. Here are the power figures for all three engines.
The naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 86.7 bhp and 115 Nm of torque.
The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine pumps out 108.4 bhp and 140 Nm of torque.
The diesel engine is good for 88.7 bhp and 200 Nm of torque.
The Altroz is available with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed DCT gearbox. All the engines offer adequate performance. However, they lack that punch needed for spirited driving. The DCT gearbox results in accurate and smooth shifts. However, it does not elevate the performance. Overall, the Altroz offers decent performance. But do not expect ultra-sporty performance, as it is not a performance hatchback.
The Altroz offers good fuel economy, irrespective of the fuel and engine variant.
The naturally aspirated petrol engine delivers a fuel efficiency of 19.33 kmpl.
The turbocharged petrol engine returns a fuel economy of 18.5 kmpl.
The diesel engine delivers a mileage of 23.64 kmpl.
The Altroz's fuel tank capacity stands at 37 litres, providing a good full tank range. The mileage figures are as per the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) rating.
The standard safety features of the Tata Altroz include dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, Corner Stability Control, reverse parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts, front seatbelt reminder, puncture repair kit, high-speed alert system and impact sensing auto door unlock. The top-spec variants get additional equipment such as Brake Sway Control, a reverse parking camera, automatic headlamps, front fog lamps and a rear defogger. The build quality of the Altroz is top-notch, and it has garnered it an impressive 5-star safety from Global NCAP.
