Tata Motors’s EV sales made up 68 per cent of the total EV sales last month.
According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, around 7,000 electric vehicles (EVs) were sold in India in November 2023. At the helm of it was Tata Motors, making up 68 per cent of the total market share.
What helped Tata Motors gain the lead in EV sales is the rise in popularity of the Tiago EV as well as the recently refreshed Nexon EV. The brand sold 4,830 units last month, registering a year-on-year growth of 61.32 per cent but a month-on-month decline of nearly 10 per cent.
Following Tata Motors is MG Motor India with total sales of 891 units in November 2023. The brand saw a YoY growth of 38.35 per cent but a MoM growth of less than one per cent. MG’s growth has been helped by the Comet becoming a popular purchase. The brand took a gamble with it and it played off.
In third position is Mahindra and Mahindra with 493 units sold last month. It only has one EV in its portfolio – the XUV400 – and it has recently gained a lot of traction as MoM sales for it have nearly doubled (87.45 per cent growth). In November 2022, Mahindra sold only one EV in the entire month.
Interestingly, BMW India outsold Hyundai India in terms of EV sales. The German manufacturer sold 262 units in November, nearly 100 units more than its Korean counterpart. While BMW has four EVs in its portfolio, namely the i4, iX1, iX and i7, Hyundai only has one – the Ioniq 5. Remarkably, Hyundai sold 160 units of the Ioniq 5 last month, despite it being priced at ₹45.95 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
BYD and Stellantis were neck and neck with both selling 122 units each. They were followed by Volvo Car India (66 units), Mercedes-Benz (53 units) and Kia India (29 units). FADA’s data shows that 36 units of the total sales figure have been attributed to ‘Others’ which would include Porsche, Audi and Jaguar.
