EV sales (domestic plus export) grew by 67 percent YoY in September and 90 percent on a quarterly basis.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd has announced its September 2026 sales figures. The company sold 70,210 passenger cars in total, with 68,810 of those sold in the domestic market and another 1,400 units exported. These numbers represent a 15 percent total year-on-year increase compared to September 2025.

Interestingly, 15,384 of the total number of units sold were electric cars. Compared to the figure of 9,191 recorded in September last year, that represents a massive 67 percent YoY increase. This shows how the company’s product mix is evolving and reflects a wider shift in the overall Indian passenger vehicle market.

For the quarter ending September 2026, TMPVL sold 2,01,723 units in total, of which 1,96,674 were domestic sales in India and 5,049 were exports. This works out to 40 percent growth compared to the 1,44,397 total units sold in the year-ago quarter. On the electric front, the company sold 47,150 cars in Q2 FY27 compared to 24,855 in Q2 FY26, representing a whopping 90 percent increase.

The company notes that these numbers show significant shifts in demand for different powertrain types in India. Q2 2027 was its best-ever quarter for EV as well as CNG sales, with the two green fuel options now accounting for 23 percent and 28 percent of all units sold. This means the company’s green vehicle portfolio outsold traditional petrol and diesel models this quarter, making up 51 percent of total sales. This is in line with the broader industry, where alternative fuels combined surpassed petrol for the first time ever in terms of overall sales in August.

Last year’s GST 2.0 reforms continue to spur growth, and demand has not tapered off yet. In fact, Tata Motors, which now sells passenger vehicles under the new Tata.Cars brand, expects demand to increase in October as the festive season gets into high gear.

Commenting on the developments, Shailesh Chandra, MD and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd said “For Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Q2 FY27 was our highest-ever quarter, with sales of 201,723 units and industry-beating growth of 40 percent year-on-year. We ended the quarter on a strong note, crossing the 70,000-unit sales milestone in September, and look forward to carrying this momentum as we enter the festive period.”

He added “Customer response remained strong across our portfolio, with Punch emerging as India’s highest-selling SUV during the quarter. Building on the momentum of our Q1 launches, we further strengthened our portfolio with Curvv SeriesX, Sierra Legend Series, and the all-new Tata Aeris… Looking ahead, we remain optimistic about the festive season, supported by a strong order book and healthy customer traction across the portfolio. As we progressively scale up production, our focus will be on fully leveraging this demand, sustaining our growth momentum and further strengthening our competitive position in the market.”
