The company hopes to carry this performance forward over the festive season, as freight and transportation needs typically spike then.
Tata Motors has announced that it sold 51,062 commercial vehicles in total, across segments and including exports, in September 2026. This is a 42.4 percent YoY increase compared to the 35,862 units it sold in the same month last year. Of that, 43,487 units were sold domestically and 7,575 were exported. The small cargo vehicle category (including pickup trucks) contributed the most, at 16,510 units, while passenger carriers grew the most, at 55.3 percent. Exports grew by a huge 179.1 percent YoY.
For the whole of Q2 FY 2026 – 27, the total sales figure stood at 1,35,114 units, or a 42.7 percent increase over 94,681 units in the year-ago period. Domestic sales accounted for 1,13,982 units while exports came to 21,132 units. Electric commercial vehicles grew by 2.4X YoY in the second quarter, but Tata Motors has not provided the number of units sold.
In its announcement, the company described its growth across all commercial vehicle segments as broad-based momentum. Heavy commercial vehicles were in demand due to sustained infrastructure, construction, and mining developments, while the intermediate and light category supports e-commerce logistics. Sales of commercial passenger transportation vehicles were also strong due to last-mile mobility needs, government orders, and more intercity travel.
The company hopes to carry this performance forward over the festive season, as freight and transportation needs typically spike then. However, a new price hike might slightly affect its October and Q3 sales.
Girish Wagh, MD & CEO, Tata Motors Ltd, said “Looking ahead, commodity costs remain a significant concern, while diesel prices, potential interest rate hikes, and global uncertainties remain key monitorables. While the high H2 base could moderate growth rates, industry fundamentals remain supportive. Sustained government capital expenditure, a post-monsoon pickup in mining and construction activity, rising e-commerce volumes, and the festive season are expected to support freight and transportation demand.”
