Tesla plans to use Intel’s 14A process for its Terafab AI facility, boosting Intel’s foundry push, even as project scale, costs and timelines remain uncertain.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company plans to use Intel’s next-generation 14A manufacturing process to produce chips for its proposed Terafab project, an advanced AI chip facility planned in Austin, Texas, USA.
According to Reuters, the deal would mark Intel’s first major external customer for the 14A node, a key step for the company as it looks to strengthen its contract manufacturing business and compete with rivals such as TSMC.
Intel has previously indicated it was in talks with potential customers for 14A but has not confirmed any major partnerships so far. The company declined to comment on Musk’s statement.
Intel recently joined the Terafab initiative alongside Tesla and SpaceX, which aims to build advanced chip production facilities to support applications ranging from electric vehicles and humanoid robots to data centres. While the broader plan remains at an early stage, Musk has outlined ambitions for the facility to eventually deliver up to one terawatt of computing capacity annually.

Several aspects of the Terafab project, including funding, operations and timelines, remain unclear. Estimates suggest that building chip capacity at this scale could require trillions of dollars in investment.
Analysts, however, see the potential partnership as a positive development for Intel, noting that securing a customer at an early stage is more critical than immediate scale, even if initial volumes are relatively modest compared to industry leaders.
