The Innova Hycross is currently the second best-selling Toyota in India, contributing around 20 percent to the carmaker’s volume.
Toyota Innova Crysta has been a true workhorse for over two decades. It won’t be wrong to say that it’s the most popular people’s mover in the country. While it has stepped into the background following the arrival of the more modern and sophisticated Innova HyCross in 2022, the Innova Crysta continues to be the preferred choice among fleet operators across the country. Although that might change in the future.
According to Autocar India, Toyota might pull the plug on the Innova Crysta by early 2027. This will potentially leave a significant void in Toyota’s line-up, especially for fleet operators. The report reveals that this decision has been taken in the interest of adhering to the stringent upcoming CAFE 3 emission norms.
It is worth noting that the Innova Crysta is offered only with a diesel powertrain, and the upcoming CAFE 3 norms will impose stricter requirements on diesel engines, making them far less viable for the market. To plug the potential gap, Toyota is planning to introduce a new base-spec hybrid variant of the Innova Hycross. Many OEMs are now shifting toward strong hybrids as an alternative to diesel engines, as they promise similar fuel efficiency — a massive selling point of diesel powertrains.

This new base-spec hybrid variant of Innova Hycross will serve as a replacement for the Crysta that will primarily target fleet operators. It’s expected to strip away much of the Innova Hycross hybrid’s creature comforts in favour of achieving a more affordable price point. The Innova Crysta is currently available in four trims — GX, GX Plus, VX, and ZX — with prices starting from ₹18.85 lakh and going up to ₹25.67 lakh (both ex-showroom).

On the other hand, the Innova Hycross petrol base variant is priced at ₹18.33 lakh, however, prices for the hybrid version of the MPV start from ₹26.30 lakh (both ex-showroom). That roughly translates to a difference of around ₹7.45 lakh between the Innova Hycross hybrid and the diesel-powered Innova Crysta.
Meeting stricter upcoming emission norms is will be easier with a petrol-hybrid powertrain. As sales of the Crysta potentially transition to the Hycross Hybrid, the higher volumes could help bring down the per-unit cost of components such as the battery and electric motor. While there’s no firm policy yet, hybrid vehicles may attract a lower GST rate in the future. If that materialises, the Innova Hycross Hybrid could become an even more cost-effective option for fleet operators.
