The Taisor rivals the likes of the Fronx, Kiger, Magnite, Venue, Sonet, Nexon and XUV300.
Toyota India has just launched its latest product in India, the Urban Cruiser Taisor. This subcompact SUV is a badge-engineered version of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and is the sixth model shared by the two brands.
Along with the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, the Taisor rivals the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV300. Here’s how the new subcompact SUV fares on paper compared to its rivals.

Since the Taisor is based on the Fronx, both have identical dimensions. They measure 3,995 mm in length, 1,765 mm in width and 1,550 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,520 mm. All models in the segment share the same length, except the Magnite and Kiger which measure 3,994 mm and 3,991 mm, respectively. The Kiger is the smallest vehicle, in terms of length, in the segment.
In terms of width, only the Magnite and Kiger are narrower than the Taisor, measuring 1,758 mm and 1,750 mm, respectively. The widest subcompact SUV is the Mahindra XUV300, measuring 1,821 mm. Talking about height, the Taisor (and by extension, the Fronx) is the shortest vehicle of the lot, measuring just 1,550 mm. The Sonet is the tallest vehicle here, measuring 1,642 mm.

The subcompact SUV segment gets a variety of engines on offer. It has naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engines, turbocharged petrol engines as well as diesel engines. For this comparison, we are not considering the diesel engine options in the Venue, Sonet, Nexon and XUV300.
The Taisor and Fronx get a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 88 bhp and 113 Nm. Compared to the other NA petrol engines, they produce the most power but aren’t the torquiest. The Sonet, with its 115 Nm, has the highest torque figure, while the Magnite and Kiger with their 96 Nm have the lowest torque figure. The Nexon and XUV300 do not come with an NA petrol engine. All NA engines come paired with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox, with the Sonet and Venue only getting the manual gearbox option.

Coming to turbo-petrol engines, all except the Nexon and XUV300 get a 1.0-litre mill, while the other two get a 1.2-litre mill. The XUV300’s TGDi turbo-petrol engine is the most powerful and torquiest engine of the lot – 129 bhp and 230 Nm. The Nexon, Venue and Sonet produce an identical 118 bhp, but the Nexon produces 170 Nm, while the other two churn out 172 Nm. The Taisor and the Fronx have identical power figures with Magnite and Kiger (99 bhp) but the latter two produce more torque – 160 Nm compared to Taisor and Fronx’s 148 Nm.
The Taisor and Fronx’s turbo-petrol engines are mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The Venue and Sonet’s turbo-petrol engine gets a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT) gearbox, but the former gets a 6-speed manual and the latter gets a 6-speed iMT. The Nexon is the only one to offer a plethora of gearboxes. The 5-speed manual is offered on the base trim, while all trims above that get a 6-speed manual. The 6-speed AMT is only available on a single mid-spec variant, while the mid- and top-spec variants get the DCT.
