Recent sightings in Europe have confirmed that KTM is in the development stages of testing its upcoming 990 RC R sportbike. The prototype, spotted during road tests, reveals several key features of the upcoming model.
For starters, the test bike displays a design that appears to draw inspiration from KTM's track-focused RC 8C. Notable design features include a layered fairing and integrated winglets, suggesting an emphasis on aerodynamics. The frame combines a steel trellis structure with a composite aluminum subframe, indicating a focus on balancing rigidity and weight.

The upcoming KTM 990 RC R will be powered by the 947cc parallel-twin engine, which is an evolution of KTM's LC8c powerplant is available with the 990 Duke. This engine is expected to produce 128 bhp and 103 Nm. The exhaust system on the test mule features a stainless steel canister.
Suspension components come from WP, with fully adjustable Apex open cartridge USD fork and an adjustable rear monoshock. Braking is handled by Brembo's Hypure calipers, the same units that made their debut on the brand new Ducati Panigale V4.

Additionally, adjustable footpegs also seem to be available, which will allow the riders to modify the ergonomics to suit their preferences. There are also reports that KTM is planning to offer a Track Edition conversion option for the standard 990 RC R.
While KTM has not officially announced a release date, we expect the KTM 990 RC R to launch in the European market in 2025. Upon release, the 990 RC R will compete in the middleweight sportbike category, alongside the likes of the Ducati Panigale V2 and Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R.
