Volkswagen completes winter testing of Rivian-based SDV architecture, triggering another $1 billion investment under their joint venture.
Volkswagen Group has announced that its joint venture with Rivian has reached a key milestone after successfully completing winter testing of Rivian’s technology integrated into Volkswagen vehicles. The development triggers an additional $1 billion investment from Volkswagen into Rivian, as part of their broader agreement.
The partnership, first announced in 2024, outlines a potential total investment of up to $5.8 billion, subject to milestone achievements. Volkswagen had initially invested $1 billion to gain access to Rivian’s electronics architecture and software capabilities, an area where the German automaker has been working to strengthen its expertise.
Since then, the collaboration has led to the development of a new software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture, which has been tested across prototype models from Volkswagen, Audi and Scout Motors.
The latest phase involved extensive winter testing of the production-intent zonal architecture. Prototypes, including the ID.EVERY1 concept, were evaluated in locations such as Phoenix, Arizona, and Arjeplog, Sweden. After initial validation in the US, the vehicles were subjected to extreme cold-weather testing in Sweden to assess performance, durability and system integration, including over-the-air update functionality.

Volkswagen said the tests confirmed that the new SDV architecture can operate reliably under harsh climatic and driving conditions. The testing was conducted by a joint team comprising engineers from Volkswagen, Audi, Scout and Rivian.
Following the successful milestone, Volkswagen will release the next $1 billion tranche of funding to Rivian, likely structured similarly to the initial investment. Looking ahead, Volkswagen Group plans to further develop the architecture in collaboration with brands such as Audi and Porsche. The company is also deploying software specialists to Rivian-linked facilities to deepen technical integration and accelerate development timelines.
