Functions of Meghalaya RTO

The Meghalaya Regional Transport Office (RTO) performs several functions to ensure smooth and efficient management of road transportation and regulation of vehicles within the state. The key functions of the Meghalaya RTO include:

Vehicle Registration in Meghalaya

The Meghalaya RTO looks after the smooth movement of vehicles within the state. The authority is responsible for the implementation of the rules and regulations as stated in the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. The Meghalaya Government under Section 39 of the Motor Vehicles Act has made it mandatory to receive a registration certificate for all vehicles operating in the region.

The Meghalaya RTO department issues four different categories of driving licenses as mentioned below:

  • Permanent Registration: Vehicles under this category usually have a long validity and you can apply through the Meghalaya RTO, as and when you complete buying the vehicle. After 30 days of issuance of a learner's license, you are eligible to apply for a permanent driving license
     
  • Temporary Registration: Vehicles registered under this category remain valid for a month and vehicles purchased immediately can opt for this registration
     
  • Commercial Driving License: This driving license applies to individuals willing to drive vehicles for commercial purposes in Meghalaya. To acquire this license, completing a training course on heavy vehicles from any government-approved training school is mandatory
     
  • International Driving Permit: If you are willing to drive on foreign shores, opt for an international driving license. This permit provides a validity of a maximum of 1 year, however, after that, you might need to reapply for it
     
  • Learner’s License: This license is the key to getting an official driving license. Moreover, someone who is in the learning phase of driving a vehicle can opt for this license

  • Road taxes annually applicable for light goods vehicles – Rs. 1575

  • Charges applicable for driving licenses – Rs. 200
  • Charges applicable for international licenses – Rs. 1000

Other Charges

  • NOC cancellation – Rs. 50
  • NOC fees – Rs. 20
  • For address change – Rs. 50
  • High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) Fees for replacement – From Rs. 1008 to Rs. 2443.50
  • HSRP Fees – From Rs. 669 to Rs. 1629
