What Do You Mean by Blacklisting of FASTag?

If you do not have sufficient balance while passing through a NETC toll plaza, your FASTag will be blacklisted at the toll plaza until there is enough balance in your FASTag account. This is known as the blacklisting of FASTag. You won’t be able to avail the NETC services and you will have to make cash payments for the toll fee.

How Does a FASTag Work?

When you pass through an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lane, the process of detecting and debiting is done by the toll plaza, the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) department, the acquirer and the issuing agency. The below steps offer insight into how FASTag works:

• Step 1: The reader installed at the ETC lane captures the FASTag details.

• Step 2: Sends the acquired information to an issuing agency, such as a bank, to process the payment.

• Step 3: The bank sends the information to NETC to validate the FASTag details.

• Step 4: Upon the FASTag being validated by NETC, the NETC will confirm details such as vehicle class, registration details and the status of the FASTag.

• Step 5: If the FASTag is not a registered tag, then it will inform the bank that the ID is not registered.

• Step 6: If the ID is valid, the acquirer bank calculates the toll fee and initiates a payment request to the NETC system.

• Step 7: The NETC will, in turn, initiate the debit request to the issuing bank or agency.

• Step 8: After the toll fee is debited, you will receive an SMS alert confirming the payment.

• Step 9: The issuer sends a confirmation to the NETC system, which, in turn, intimates the acquirer host, which then intimates the toll plaza system.

Points to Remember About FASTag:

While purchasing and using the FASTag, here are some of the important points to remember:

• You cannot use one FASTag on more than one vehicle.

• If you live within 10 km of the toll plaza, you can take advantage of the concession on toll fee once your address is verified.

No FASTag?

Beginning 1 December 2019, FASTag is compulsory on all private and commercial vehicles and all NETC-toll plazas have been equipped to accept toll fees through the RFID enabled FASTag. However, except for one lane all lanes will be FASTag enabled. If you do not have a FASTag, then passing through the Non-FASTag lane will attract double the toll fee as a penalty.

As a measure to encourage customers to move to FASTag enabled vehicles, the government of India will offer the option to buy FASTags through Point-of-Sale at toll plazas. Also, the government is offering free FASTag between 21 November to 1 December 2019.

NHAI Plans to Bring Touch-and-go Prepaid Cards

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is thinking of bringing in touch-and-go prepaid cards to ease the congestion at toll plazas on national highways. These cards will be modelled as per the Delhi Metro cards. The objective is to reduce the cash transactions at these toll collection centres. Such a card will be priced at INR 50 and is designed to be used specifically on the hybrid lanes. These are the lanes where the toll fee can be paid by cash or electronically.

The introduction of FASTags has helped to reduce the dependence on cash. Majority of the lanes at the toll plazas are FASTag lanes and only one on either side has a cash collection booth. While the FASTag can perform the toll collection transaction in 16 to 18 seconds, the prepaid card can do in around 28 seconds, which is better than the time taken for cash transactions.

FASTags Become Mandatory for Four-wheelers Sold Before 2017

FASTags are prepaid tags on vehicles that seamlessly enable digital toll collection. Previously, they were made mandatory by the government for four-wheelers sold after 1 December 2017. Now, the tags have become mandatory for four-wheelers in the M and N category sold before 1 December 2017 as well. This new rule shall be applicable from the first of January 2021. FASTags have also been made compulsory for obtaining third-party insurance from 1 April 2021. The Indian Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is considering changes in the usage of FASTags. As per these changes, the FASTag will become more important for vehicle owners. FASTags facilitate toll collection in a seamless manner as they enable automatic payment deduction. The ministry has proposed to make the FASTag compulsory for purchasing Third-party Car Insurance. Buying a Third-party Liability car insurance policy is already mandatory as per The Motor Vehicles Act—this means, vehicle owners must insure their car. This change is proposed to come into effect from 1 April 2021. Apart from this proposal, there is one more proposal concerning FASTags. The ministry is thinking of making FASTags compulsory for four-wheeled vehicles sold prior to December 2017. This proposal is said to come into effect from January 2021. FASTag Mandatory to Get Discounts at Toll Plazas

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has made it compulsory to affix FASTag in commuters’ vehicles to get discounts at the national highway toll plazas. The Central Government has made it compulsory to allow vehicles with FASTag to get any form of discounts in an effort to promote FASTag technology. The MoRTH has changed the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, to avail discounts on return journeys within 24 hours and other exemptions only if the vehicle has the FASTag. The Centre, in December 2019, made it mandatory for all vehicles to affix FASTag to promote the use of digital payments of tolls on national highways. The FASTag is a radio frequency identification tag which allows motorists to pass through toll plazas without having to stop and pay by cash. Maharashtra Government Announces Toll Waiver for Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the widely celebrated festivals in Maharashtra. The festival is celebrated in the cities as well as in the interiors. Often, people hailing from the state’s Konkan area visit their hometown during this festival. They visit their homes located in Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg via the Mumbai-Goa, Mumbai-Pune, or Kolhapur-Bengaluru highways. These are the highways where there are toll charges. However, as per the recent announcement made by the Maharashtra Government, the toll charges have been waived off for people travelling towards the Konkan region to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi. The waiver will be applicable for 2-days before and after the festival that falls on 22 August 2020. Those who wish to avail the waiver need to visit the local Police Station and share the necessary personal and vehicle-related details and receive a sticker. People travelling to the Konkan region need to undergo a COVID-19 test 48 hours before their journey. The test must be negative.

FASTag Collection at Pre-COVID Level

In a statement issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the toll collection at national highway toll plazas using FASTag has reached pre-COVID levels in the month of July. Transactions during the month increased by 7% compared to the previous month. However, this was not the case on a month-on-month basis. Total transactions through FASTag were at 8.6 crores with the total value at Rs. 1,623 crores. In June 2020, the total transactions stood at 8.2 crores and the transactions were at Rs. 1,511 crores. FASTag became mandatory in December 2019 for all vehicles plying through national highway toll plazas. This was done to reduce wait time at the toll booth as well as for seamless movement of vehicles. FASTag uses the Radio Frequency ID technology to capture the details of the vehicle and charge tolls electronically. The Transport Ministry has urged all commuters to switch to FASTag to avoid waiting at toll plazas to pay the fee. While most of the lanes are converted to FASTag lanes, there are one or two lanes still accepting cash payments until all vehicles are enabled with the FASTag.

FASTag Revenue Increased by 54% in July

The revenue from National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag has propelled by 54% in the month of July as compared to the revenue in June. The number of transactions was a whopping 86.26 million in July and the revenue collected stood at Rs. 1623.30 crores. The transaction count in the month of June was 81.92 million and it gathered Rs. 1511.93 crore. As per the Chief Operating Officer of NPCI Praveena Rai, the reason for this success is the interoperability of NETC FASTag, because of which the vehicle owners are having a smooth experience at the toll plaza. Considering the current COVID-19 situation, she mentioned that NPCI is working hard towards making toll payments convenient, hassle-free, and contactless. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai now have Contactless and Interoperable Parking Solution with NETC FASTag and such facilities are also available at the GMR Hyderabad International Airport. NETC FASTag is a minimalistic sticker that is placed on the windscreen on a vehicle. The scanners automatically detect the information present on each sticker and automatically deduct the corresponding charges from the FAStag accounts of the owners. This allows the vehicles to pass through the toll plaza without stopping for making manual payments.

Transport Ministry Makes FASTag Mandatory for New Vehicle Registration

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has asked the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to ensure that the details of the FASTag are captured when new vehicles are registered. Also, it said it should be mandatory for vehicles to get a FASTag before obtaining the Fitness Certificate (FC). The details of the Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology captures vehicle details while crossing national highway toll plazas and the payment is done electronically. The NIC provides e-governance support and it is the network backbone of the centre, state and government bodies. The electronic toll collection data is integrated with the Vahan web portal, which is used to register and store details of vehicles in a central database. The centre has made it mandatory for both private and public vehicles to get the FASTag to pay toll electronically and not pay at the toll plazas. This was initiated for a smoother journey while passing toll plazas. With the new notification to register a vehicle only with a FASTag makes it effective by reducing the possibilities of spread of the deadly novel coronavirus at toll plazas.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has stated that FASTag technology can be practical and beneficial during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The FASTag technology is used to collect tolls on highways across India. It makes use of the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to enable no-contact toll collection. This was due to the restrictions on private vehicles or transport vehicles which transport non-essential goods. FASTag payments at toll plazas across the national highways have declined by 40% from February levels in April 2020. That said, the payments have increased in May after the lockdown restrictions have been lifted across several states. FASTags were introduced in December last year to collect tolls on national highway toll plazas electronically. This was initiated to reduce traffic at toll plazas as well as the ease of paying toll at the plazas.

During the lockdown, the NHAI has supported stranded drivers, cleaners, migrants and others with food, water and other necessities. Pay Double Toll If Found Without Valid or Functional FASTag

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced that you will have to pay twice the charge at toll plazas on national highways if you enter a FASTag lane with a non-functional or invalid FASTag. In a notification issued by the Ministry, it mandates to charge twice the toll while entering a FASTag lane without a functional or valid FASTag. Earlier in this announcement, users had to pay double the toll only if the vehicle was not fitted with a FASTag and entered a FASTag lane. The Ministry said that more than 1 crore FASTags have been issued as of December 2019 and the daily average is about 1.5 to 2 lakh.

FASTag Technology Making Sure Safety Aspects During COVID-19 Times

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that FASTag technology is making sure the safety aspects of commuters during these challenging times especially to contain COVID-19. It added that to date more than 1.60 crore FASTags have been issued till the beginning of May 2020. The cashless payment of toll through FASTag technology is not only useful in times of COVID-19 but will also be useful once the lockdown ends. Radio Frequency ID (RFID) technology is used in the FASTag for making toll payments electronically without having to stop at the toll plaza and make payments manually thereby eliminating several touchpoints in the process and ensuring zero human contact. The NHAI said that once the lockdown is lifted, it foresees an increase in private and commercial vehicle traffic on national highways and this could increase the chances of COVID-19 spread. In these situations, FASTag will be the safest mode of making toll payments which ensures zero human contact.

NHAI To Redress Disputes Worth Rs.80,000 Crore

In the wake of the ongoing lockdown due to the COVID-19 situation in the country, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is using this time to resolve disputes worth Rs.80,000 crore. Also, the highways regulator will review ongoing projects to speed up the work. NHAI said that they are holding about seven video conferences every day to address disputes. It said that nearly 180 cases with disputes worth Rs.80,000 will be addressed during this lockdown period. It added that it will place all disputes before the reconciliation committees to speed up the closure of the pending cases. Of the 180 cases, officials of the NHAI are working on 86 cases out of which 33 cases are ready for disposal by the reconciliation committees.

COVID-19: Food, Water Arrangements Made by NHAI At Toll Plazas

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken the initiative to provide water and food at toll plazas across national highways. Representing around 90 lakh truck drivers, the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has been requesting the government to intervene to offer relief to several truck drivers stranded across national highways. With restaurants and hotels closed along national highways, the NHAI has made arrangements at toll plazas with food and water. In a statement, the NHAI said that truck drivers are the lifeline of the country, especially during the lockdown since they are carrying essential supplies and it is important that goods are transported without any hassles for the welfare of the society.

COVID-19: NHAI and Its Officials Pledge a Day’s Salary to PM CARES

The NHAI announced that it’s officials have decided to give a day’s salary to the PM CARES fund, emphasising its efforts in eradicating the deadly Coronavirus infections in the country. The highway regulator said it is ensuring smooth passage of essential goods and emergency vehicles across the country’s national highways. In a statement, the highway authority said that essential goods such as water, food and other support are being offered to drivers carrying essential goods and services as well as people stranded near construction sites, toll plazas, and shelter homes. Emergency services such as patrol vehicles, ambulances, among others are working with local authorities to offer services during the lockdown.

COVID-19: Toll Collections at NH Suspended Until 14 April

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has asked the NHAI to stop collecting toll across National Highways in the country until 14 April 2020 when the 21-day lockdown comes to an end. However, maintenance and emergency services will continue at the toll plazas. The announcement comes amid the rising Coronavirus infections which have led to the lockdown from 25 March to 14 April 2020. The temporary suspension of toll collection at the NH is expected to ease the supply of emergency services and save crucial time. NHAI Awards Rs.860 crore Road Project to Dilip Buildcon in Chhattisgarh

NHAI’s Bharatmala Pariyojana Project Awarded to Adani Enterprises

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded the Bharatmala Pariyojana project to Adani Enterprises Ltd. (AEL) for the construction of National Highway 16 in Andhra Pradesh. In a regulatory filing to the BSE, Adani Enterprises said that the company led consortium has been awarded from NHAI for building the six-lane Vijaywada Bypass on NH 16 including bridges across river Krishna on the hybrid annuity mode. The company said that the project will be completed in 2.5 years and would evaluate and bid for attractive opportunities in the transport sector, a value generator for stakeholders. The filing also said that the construction would be complete in record time and to world-class quality standards.

FASTag Transactions Increases in Karnataka

FASTag collections in Karnataka is on the rise with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) claims that electronic toll payments offer a smoother movement of vehicles through national highway toll plaza lanes. The NHAI has said that FASTag transactions have increased by 10% while about 35% of vehicles continue to travel through toll plazas without the mandatory RFID stickers. Passing through NH toll plazas are a breeze now thanks to the mandatory implementation of FASTag on vehicles to pay the toll to ensure faster movement through the lanes. 

20 Crore Rupees Collected From Defaulters Entering FASTag Lanes

The NHAI said that it has collected Rs.20 crore from 18 lakh defaulters entering the FASTag lanes on National Highway Toll Plazas. FASTag lanes were introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in the country in December 2019. Also, the MoRTH announced that double toll fee will be collected from vehicles passing through FASTag lanes without a tag. This was done to encourage vehicle owners adapting FASTags. The NHAI said that it has collected Rs.20 lakh from 18 lakh defaulters across the country. The FASTag is an RFID based tag which enables FASTag vehicles to pass through NH toll plazas without having to stop to pay by cash.

FASTag to be Free of Charge for 15 Days: NHAI:

In an effort to boost electronic toll collection, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has waived the FASTag fee until 29 February 2020. FASTag based toll collection has been rolled out the government across 527 national highways. The FASTag fee of Rs.100 has been waived for 15 days i.e. from 15 to 29 February 2020. One can visit any of the authorised Point-of-Sale (POS) location along with the registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle to procure the FASTag for free. Road users can search for the nearest POS through the MyFASTag app or call 1033 NH helpline number or visit www.ihmcl.com. The security deposit and the minimum balance amount for the FASTag wallet remain the same.

12 NHAI Highway Stretches to be Monetised Before 2024

Under the Budget 2020-21, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will monetise about 12 highways to raise resources before 2024. The 12 identified highway stretches spans over 6,000km. The announcement was made by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman while delivering the Union Budget 2020-21. Mandatory FASTag Rule Eased at 65 NH Toll Plazas

The Central government has eased the mandatory FASTag rule at 65 national highway toll plazas. Select toll plazas with high cash transactions to allow more than 25% hybrid lanes which accepts both FASTag and cash payments. The move came amidst concerns about high cash transactions at 65 toll plazas in the country. In a note, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that based on the traffic at these 65 toll plazas, not more than 25% FASTag lanes may be temporarily converted as hybrid lanes. The NHAI has equipped about 535 toll plazas with Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), except for these 65 toll plazas.

Highest Daily Toll Collection at Over Rs.86 Crore: NHAI Chairman

The daily toll collection on 11 January 2020 rose to Rs.86.2 crore said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Chairman. Also, the daily toll collection through the FASTag system was at Rs.50 crore on a single day this month as against Rs.23 crore recorded in November 2019. The NHAI Chairman said the daily FASTag transactions have increased to about 30 lakh per day this month compared to 8 lakh transactions in July 2019. He added that the toll plaza in Jodhpur, Jaipur has recorded 91% toll collection through the new implemented FASTags. The central government has started collecting toll through the electronic toll collection based FASTag from 15 December 2019. It’s mandatory to affix FASTag and has been rolled across more than 500 national highway toll plazas.

Your Trip is Free if FASTag is Not Read By the Scanner

Through a notification, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed that commuters can travel toll-free if the FASTag is not read by the toll plaza scanner. As per the National Highway Fee Determination of Rates and Collection Amendment Rule 2018 notification, passengers are allowed to pass the toll lane if the scanner fails to read the FASTag. This rule is applicable if the vehicle has a functional and valid FASTag with the required balance is unable to pay the toll. The vehicle will be allowed to travel with a receipt of zero transaction for all such transactions. FASTag is mandatory and is a rechargeable tag that allows users to make cashless toll payments without the need to stop at the toll plaza to pay by cash or other modes of payments.

Deadline for Suggestions About Changes of BOT Model Extended by NHAI

In a statement, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has extended the deadline for suggestions from road developers, consultants, lenders, industry bodies, bankers and other stakeholders on the revision of the BOT model. Speed Breakers to be Removed at Toll Plazas Says NHAI

In a special drive, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will remove rumble strips and all types of speed breakers on national highways, especially at the toll plazas. The initiative comes after the number of vehicles with FASTags have increased in the recent past. No Toll if FASTag Scanner is Faulty

If the FASTag scanner at the toll plaza is faulty and does not read the RFID on the vehicle, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) notified that a vehicle user need not pay any toll charge while crossing the FASTag lane. A zero transaction receipt will be issued to users who pass through faulty FASTag lanes. The NHAI said that if a vehicle with a valid FASTag and with sufficient balance passes through malfunction FASTag lanes, then the vehicle will be allowed to cross the toll plaza without having to pay the toll. FASTag became mandatory from 15 December 2019 allowing users to pass national highway plazas without having to stop to pay by cash.

KIIFB Releases First Instalment to NHAI for Land Acquisition

The infrastructure funding division of the Kerala government, the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has released the first instalment of the Rs.5,200 crore grant to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The KIIFB has released Rs.390 crore towards land acquisition by the NHAI. KIIFB is partly financing the development of more than 500 km of national highways in Kerala to four/six lanes. The Kerala government has directed the KIIFB to grant the funds to NHAI as the state government cannot take the burden; however, it will give a part of the motor vehicle tax collections over the next 30 years to help the infrastructure investment arm to repay the loan availed for this grant.

Now You Can Recharge Your FASTag Through BHIM UPI: NPCI

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that FASTag customers can recharge the NETC enabled tags through BHIM UPI. All mobile apps which support BHIM-UPI to recharge the FASTag through the digital mode of payments. The central government decided to make all toll payments cashless to enable commuters to cross toll plazas without having to wait in the queue to pay through cash or card. FASTag is mandatory for all private and public vehicles plying through national highways in India from 15 December 2019. The Centre is ensuring better payment options to recharge the FASTag account with the new initiative of BHIM UPI making it easier for commuters to recharge the account hassle-free.

Over 10 Million FASTag Issued Till Date

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) announced that over 10 million FASTags have been issued through the POS counters set up throughout the country. And, over 21 lakh transactions on a daily basis have been clocked by FASTags. Also, about 30 lakh FASTags were issued in the month of November and December. The statement added that about 2 lakh FASTags are being issued on a daily basis. NHAI started collecting cashless toll payments through Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) enabled FASTags. It has earmarked 75% of the toll lanes as FASTag lanes, while 20% have been kept as hybrid lanes.

Deadline to Affix FASTag Extended to 15 January 2020

The central government extended the deadline to affix FASTag to all vehicles in the country again to 15 January 2020. Earlier, it was extended from 1 to 15 December 2019. The move to extend the mandatory FASTag comes amid a high number of vehicles yet to be affixed with a FASTag. FASTag is enabled by the Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and is a prepaid recharge tag. It allows automatic toll collection across National Highway toll plazas in the country. All toll plazas are equipped with the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) infrastructure to collect cashless toll payments. Commuters can buy FASTags from 22 certified banks as well as e-commerce platforms such as Paytm, Amazon and Airtel. Or, you could buy one at over 27,000 point-of-sale (POS) counters set up nearby the toll plazas. FASTag has a validity of 5 years. Payments options include credit and debit card, net banking, Paytm, Google Pay, UPI, etc.

NHAI Begins Electronic Toll Collection Across National Highway Toll Plazas

In its effort to make toll payments cashless, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has begun collecting toll through cashless facility based on the Radio-Frequency ID enabled FASTag. To ensure seamless movement at toll plazas, all 523 NH toll plazas have been equipped with the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) infrastructure. NHAI Keeps 25% Hybrid Lanes at National Highway Toll Plazas to Address Non-FASTag Vehicles

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that 25% of the NH toll plazas are hybrid lanes for cash and digital payments of toll. NHAI Extends Deadline for Affixing FASTags by 30 Days

With more than 50% of vehicle owners yet to get a Radio-Frequency ID-based FASTag for their vehicles, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has extended the deadline by another 30 days from 15 December 2019 for the passage to mandatory usage of FASTag. The NHAI Chairman has asked regional officers of NHAI to convert FASTag lanes into hybrid lanes as a temporary measure until the full transition to FASTags. However, he said that not more than 25% of FASTag lanes will be converted to hybrid lanes. NHAI Get Cabinet Authorisation to Set Up Infra Investment Trust

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been authorised by the Union Cabinet to set up infrastructure investment trust (InvIT), allowing it to monetise national highways which are completed and meets its financial requirements. Under the trust, projects on National Highways will be part of the formation of special purpose vehicle (SPV) and offered to investors. The SPV will then be traded on stock exchanges, while the returns will be determined based on the trust’s performance in the capital market. The statement read that the corpus of special institutions and retail savings will be invested in the infrastructure sector through trust. The trust will be established by the NHAI under the Indian Trust Act, 1882 and SEBI (Infrastructure Investment Trust), 2014.

National Highway Toll Plazas in West Bengal FASTag Ready

All the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) toll plazas in West Bengal are FASTag are ready to be implemented from 15 December 2019. The announcement comes ahead of the 15 December 2019 deadline. The deadline was extended by 15 days to enable citizens to get the vehicle FASTag ready before all toll plazas operated by the NHAI will accept cashless toll payment at toll plazas. National Highways Will Soon Have Safety Ratings

Free FASTag Available at Toll Plazas for Limited Period

With FASTag to be mandatory on all vehicles from 1 December 2019, the Central government is encouraging vehicle owners to move towards Electronic Toll Collection system. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said that FASTags will be available free of cost from 22 November to 1 December 2019. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will offer free FASTags until 1 December to encourage commuters to move to FASTags at the earliest. This is also available for free at RTOs and transport hubs. The security deposit for FASTag has been waived as well, which is charged at Rs.150. While this feature is free, you need to link your it to your bank account. The minister added that about 90% of the toll booths have moved to FASTag enabled lanes.
