Bihar has its unique festivals and fairs which resounds the cultural heritage of the state and its people through different art and religious events. Below are some of the popular festivals and important days observed by Bihar:
Chhath Pooja: One of the most important and popular festivals in Bihar is the Chhath Pooja. Dedicated to the Sun God, Chhath Pooja is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated six days after Diwali or Deepavali. Hindus celebrate the festival as a thanksgiving as well as to seek blessings of the Sun God for the sustenance of life on the earth. Women observe a fast for the blessings of the Sun God or Surya upon their family.
Sonepur Cattle Fair: The Sonepur Cattle Fair is an ancient practice and is considered as Asia’s largest cattle fair. Domestic animals such as cattle, camels, sheep, birds, among others are traded. One can witness several handicrafts and cottage industry produce during the fair. You can also see some of the folk music and dances of the residents of Bihar.
Rajgir Mahotsav: Rajgir was the capital of the Magadha Empire and is considered holy by both Jains and Buddhists. The Mahotsav is held every year with classical instrumental music, folk dance, and other forms of art and dance. The Rajgir Mahotsav is held during the month of October and is visited by tourists from around the world.
Sama Chakeva: Sama Chakeva takes place when the migratory birds move from the Himalayas to the plains during the winter season. People observe Sama Chakeva in celebrations of the relationship between brothers and sisters. Children mould clay idols of different types of birds and decorate them. Rituals are dedicated to the return of birds during the next winter season.
