Kerala celebrates its festivals with a lot of excitement. If you are planning to visit Kerala, you should plan a trip during festivals to witness the local culture, traditions and savour their local cuisine. Below are some of the important festivals of Kerala:
Onam: Onam is one of the important festivals of Kerala since it’s a state festival and unique to any religion. Mahabali, the Asura (demon) King, is believed to have brought peace and prosperity to the people of Kerala. Keralites celebrate Onam by inviting Mahabali to their house to showcase that peace and prosperity. Onasadya is integral to Onam, which is a vegetarian meal with more than 50 dishes that are served during the festivities.
Kerala Boat Festival: Kerala is known for its tourism in the backwaters and the Kerala Boat Festival is where one can witness the Kerala boat race. If you are in Kerala, do not miss to see the famous Kerala boat race.
Vishu: The onset of the spring season or the beginning of the calendar month of Malayali month of Medam. People consider that the first view of the sun upon waking up in the morning is considered to bring abundance during the new year.
Attukal Pongala: For the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, the Pongala is an important festival. The 10-day long festival begins at the start of the month of Makaram-Kumbham. In 2009, the Guinness Book of Records awarded the gathering as “The largest annual gathering of women in an event organised by Attukal Bhagavathy Temple Trust in Kerala.
Christmas: Followers of Christ celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on the 25th of December every year. In Kerala, especially in Kochi, one can see the elaborate decorations and the festive spirit of the Keralites during the holiday season. From Christmas cakes, new dresses, Christmas trees and the delicacies made only during Christmas, Kerala offers an insight into how Christians celebrate the arrival of their Messiah.
