Apart from the national festivals, Maharashtra celebrates festivals which are unique to its culture and traditions. With a diverse community and different traditions, festivals in Maharashtra are celebrated with great gusto. Below are some of the important festivals and days in Maharashtra:

  • Ganesh Chaturthi: People across the world come to witness Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai. The 11-day festival begins with the installation of Lord Ganesh in large pandals on the streets and at homes. Several cultural events are organised and it’s a great occasion to meet and greet relatives and friends.

  • Shivaji Jayanti: The greatest ruler of Maharashtra, Shivaji Maharaj epitomises courage and intelligence. People of Maharashtra have great regard for him and celebrate his birth on this day. Processions and pandals are installed in reverence to the great Shivaji Maharaj. Plays about battles, bravery, wisdom and the kindness of the Maharaj are played out to keep his legacy alive.

  • Maharashtra Day: On the 1st of May, Maharashtra celebrates the state formation day. The statehood was attained in 1960 and every year the state celebrates its birth on this day. Processions, concerts, parades, among others are observed during the day.

  • Ajanta Ellora Festival: The festival is conducted at the amazing Ajanta Ellora caves portraying the rich legacy of the state. Different art forms and performances are played out during the festival.

  • Elephanta Festival: Paying homage to Indian classical artists, who perform at the festival, the tourism department of the state ensures there is recognition of different forms of art. The festival encourages traditional performances and classical artists from across the globe.

  • Gudi Padwa: The harvest festival of the stare, people of the Hindu faith consider Gudi Padwa to be the most auspicious day. Rangolis adorn households and a Gudi is placed at the front of the house to welcome good health and prosperity. Signifying victory, Gudi is characterised by a bamboo stick wrapped in a silk cloth and garlanded with flowers.
