2024 Porsche 911 Gets Hybrid Tech for the First Time

Porsche has updated its most iconic sports car, the 911. With the facelift, it now not only gets a refreshed design and new features but also a hybrid powertrain. It’s not a conventional hybrid system but one derived from Porsche’s motorsport activities. The 911 facelift is expected to launch in India later this year. 

The hybrid tech is currently only available on the 911 GTS variants. It includes two electric motors where one is coupled with the transmission and the other is integrated into the turbocharger. The latter, mounted between the compressor and turbine wheel of the turbocharger, gives a boost of 15 bhp and Porsche claims it helps instantly spool the turbocharger to the optimum requirement. Furthermore, this has allowed Porsche to move to a single turbocharger setup instead of two.

The other electric motor is a permanent magnet synchronous motor that is housed in the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This e-motor provides an additional 54 bhp and 150 Nm and is coupled to a 1.9 kWh battery. The 911 GTS facelift has a 3.6-litre flat-six engine that produces 479 bhp and 570 Nm. Combined, the 911 GTS produces 534 bhp and 610 Nm, which compared to the previous 911 GTS is an increase of 60 bhp. Despite all the hybrid tech, Porsche claims the new 911 GTS is only 50 kg heavier than its predecessor. The new GTS has a claimed top speed of 312 kmph and can do the 0-100 kmph in 3.0 seconds. 

The 911 Carrera continues with a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine that produces 389 bhp and 450 Nm. Porsche claims the new Carrera Coupe variant can do the 0-100 kmph run in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 294 kmph. 

Porsche has also revised the suspension of the 911 GTS. The ride height has now been lowered by 10 mm and it also gets rear-wheel steering as standard. With the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), the 911 GTS gets an electro-hydraulic control system, aiding the handling characteristics. It also gets wider tyres than before which Porsche claims improves driving dynamics and grip. 

Cosmetically, the 911 facelift gets new bumpers, new headlamps and redesigned taillamps, a new design for the alloy wheels and a new radiator grille at the back. With the new Matrix LED headlamps, Porsche has removed the auxiliary lights in the front bumper and it claims this makes space for larger cooling vents in the front. At the back, the 911’s new radiator grille now has five slats on each side and the number plate housing has moved upwards in the rear bumper. 

The 911 also gets active front diffusers under the car along with adaptive flaps in the intakes in the front bumper. Porsche claims these flaps direct more air to the car’s cooling systems when there is a higher demand for power. It also gets an optional aero kit with a large rear wing and a different front bumper with a bigger splitter.

Inside, the updated 911 gets a 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster for the first time. Porsche says it can be configured to show nine different screens including a full-screen view of the navigation system. It also gets a 10.9-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay integration. 

Porsche says the new 911 will be available to order and can be had in multiple variants. It gets the Carrera Coupe and Carrera Cabriolet with rear-wheel-drive, GTS with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive as well as Targa 4 GTS with all-wheel drive.
