The standout performer was the light commercial vehicle segment, which grew 23 per cent to 6,265 units from 5,103 units a year earlier.

Hinduja Group's Ashok Leyland on Monday posted solid set of sales numbers for April 2026, with total domestic volumes climbing 14 per cent year-on-year to 14,242 units, against 12,509 units in the same month in 2025. The headline growth was driven by a strong showing in light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and a healthy uptick in truck sales, though a sharp fall in bus volumes prevented an even stronger overall result.

Within the domestic market, medium and heavy commercial vehicle (MHCV) trucks recorded a 15 per cent rise to 6,814 units, up from 5,915 units in April 2025. Bus sales told a different story, falling 22 per cent to 1,163 units which is a decline sharp enough to limit total M&HCV domestic growth to 8 per cent , at 7,977 units combined.

The standout performer was the light commercial vehicle segment, which grew 23 per cent to 6,265 units from 5,103 units a year earlier, making it the fastest-growing category in the domestic market and a significant contributor to the overall volume increase.

When exports are included, Ashok Leyland's total sales reached 14,646 units in April 2026, a 9 per cent improvement on the 13,421 units sold in April 2025. Trucks again led the way, with M&HCV truck sales, domestic and export combined, rising 15 per cent to 7,007 units, while LCV volumes grew 16 per cent to 6,344 units.

The bus segment remained a weak spot across both channels. Combined domestic and export bus sales dropped 30 per cent  year-on-year to 1,295 units, which weighed heavily on the M&HCV total. Including exports, overall M&HCV sales grew just 4 per cent to 8,302 units, a considerably softer figure than the truck-only numbers might suggest.

The April results present a broadly positive but uneven picture for the company.

Demand for goods-carrying vehicles, both light and heavy, is clearly holding firm, while the bus business continues to lag. Whether that weakness is seasonal or reflects something more structural in fleet procurement is likely to become clearer over the coming months.
