The commercial vehicle maker's total domestic volumes climbed to 17,980 units, led by a sharp jump in heavy truck sales.

Ashok Leyland's domestic sales grew 33 per cent year-on-year in July 2026, with total volumes rising to 17,980 units from 13,501 in the same month last year, according to figures released by the Chennai-based company on Monday.

The growth was driven primarily by medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) trucks, which saw domestic sales climb 43 per cent to 9,323 units, up from 6,518 units in July 2025. Including exports, truck sales rose 47 per cent to 9,809 units.

The company's overall domestic M&HCV segment, comprising trucks and buses, grew 36 per cent to 11,050 units. However, this masked a divergence within the category: while truck demand surged, domestic bus sales rose only 6 per cent to 1,727 units. When exports are included, total M&HCV bus sales actually fell 14 per cent to 2,461 units, dragged down by weaker overseas shipments.

The light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment also posted solid growth, with domestic sales up 29 per cent to 6,930 units. Including exports, LCV volumes rose 32 per cent to 7,320 units.

Combining domestic and export sales, Ashok Leyland's total vehicle dispatches for July stood at 19,590 units, a 30 per cent increase over the 15,064 units sold in the corresponding month last year.

On a cumulative basis for the financial year so far, domestic sales through July reached 64,282 units, up 17 per cent from 54,728 units a year earlier. Including exports, cumulative sales touched 68,353 units, a 15 per cent rise over 59,302 units.

The truck-led recovery reflects broader momentum in India's commercial vehicle market, where infrastructure spending, mining activity and freight movement have supported fleet replacement and capacity addition through the first half of the calendar year. Heavy truck demand tends to track construction and logistics cycles closely, and the scale of growth in July suggests fleet operators are continuing to add capacity after a period of more measured buying.

The bus segment's comparatively subdued performance, particularly in exports, points to a more uneven recovery across vehicle categories. Bus procurement in India is often linked to state transport undertaking orders, which can be lumpy from month to month, while export markets for buses have faced their own demand fluctuations.

Ashok Leyland, part of the Hinduja Group, remains one of India's largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, competing chiefly with Tata Motors and, in certain segments, VE Commercial Vehicles and Mahindra. The July numbers will be read alongside industry-wide data as an early indicator of how the commercial vehicle cycle is shaping up for the rest of the financial year, with truck volumes likely to remain the segment to watch in the months ahead.
