Bajaj Auto seems to have hit the bull's eye with the Freedom 125, for the world's first CNG production motorcycle registered its highest-ever sales since its launch in July. As per the VAHAN portal, sales of the Freedom 125 grew by a whopping 68 per cent in October to 8,310 units, compared to 4,935 units sales it registered last month, September 2024. Particularly interesting was the trend where the base-spec model saw more takers than the top-spec model.
To complement this spike in demand, Bajaj Auto will now ramp up wholesale dispatch of the CNG bike, as it has plans to dispatch 30,000 units in the third quarter, and from there 40,000 units in the fourth quarter of FY24-25.
On a national level, the Bajaj Freedom 125 comprised 0.6 per cent of the total motorcycles sold. However, the response it registered in some states was noteworthy. Delhi leads the sales chart, where the Freedom 125 comprised 1.3 per cent of the total two-wheelers registered. This was followed by Gujarat, where it registered 1.2 per cent of the total motorcycles sold, while Madhya Pradesh and Haryana formed the remainder of the highest-selling markets for the bike.
A surge in the number of CNG fuel pumps in the country complemented this growth in Bajaj Freedom 125 sales. There are now 4,650 CNG stations across the country that cover more than 365 cities. This number will increase further, and coupled with Bajaj's plan to ramp up production, the Freedom 125 seems poised to set new targets.
On this note, TVS Motor Company is also exploring a CNG option. We reported earlier that the Hosur-based manufacturer is planning to introduce its debut CNG two-wheeler with its most popular Jupiter badge. However, the manufacturer is still at least two years away from launching a production-spec of the same, particularly due to the complication of the technology.
