The launch of the new Gold Star 650 will also mark the comeback of the BSA badge to the country.
British brand BSA Motorcycles is poised to make its official debut in India tomorrow with the launch of its Gold Star 650 model. BSA, short for Birmingham Small Arms, has a rich history dating back to 1861. The company, which initially focused on firearm production, entered the motorcycle market in 1903 and released its first model in 1910.
The introduction of BSA Motorcycles in India completes a trio for Classic Legends, the manufacturer behind Yezdi and Jawa motorcycles. Here’s what we expect will be the highlights of the upcoming motorcycle:
The BSA Gold Star 650 is expected to be launched with an aggressive pricing strategy. Somewhere between ₹2.80-₹2.90 lakh (ex-showroom) is our expectation. In this price range, the BSA Gold Star 650 will be the most affordable 650 cc motorcycle in India.
BSA had already launched the Gold Star 650 two years ago in the UK. So, we already know what the bike will look like, and the term ‘classic’ comes instantly to the mind. The Gold Star 650 is designed to embody the essence of vintage style, featuring elements reminiscent of the classic 1950/60s BSA Gold Star. These include wire-spoke wheels, a circular headlight with daytime running lights, and a teardrop fuel tank.
The BSA Gold Star 650 is powered by a 652cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. In the UK market, the bike produces 45 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 55Nm at 4,000 rpm. We expect BSA to retain the same specs for our market as well.
The BSA Gold Star 650 is built around a cradle frame, that is suspended by a 41mm telescopic front fork, and a 5-step preload-adjustable twin shock absorber at the rear. Braking is handled by a 320mm front disc and a 255mm rear disc, complemented by standard dual-channel ABS.
Upon its launch, the BSA Gold Star 650 will directly compete with the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, which currently starts at an ex-showroom price of Rs 3.03 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). However, on the flip side, the Royal Enfield is also slated to launch the Classic 650 – so for roadster enthusiasts, the Indian motorcycling industry will have quite some exciting options.
