BYD will move beyond pure EVs with the introduction of its DM-i plug-in hybrid tech in India.

BYD India is preparing to expand its domestic product portfolio beyond its current all-electric vehicle line-up. The Chinese automaker has officially confirmed that it will unveil its first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) for the Indian market tomorrow, 9 June 2026.

This strategic move marks a major shift in the brand's India operations, which have previously focused exclusively on battery electric vehicles like the Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion 7.

The upcoming model will introduce the company's proprietary ‘DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV’ powertrain to Indian consumers. The tech in this powertrain is engineered around an electric-first driving philosophy.

Unlike traditional parallel hybrid systems where the combustion engine remains the dominant source of power, BYD’s setup ensures that the electric motor handles the majority of daily driving duties. The onboard petrol engine serves primarily as a starter-generator to keep the Blade Battery replenished, or as a range extender during high-speed, long-distance journeys.

By utilising this technology alongside regenerative braking, the system aims to provide the silent, linear performance of an EV while completely removing long-distance charging anxieties.

While the manufacturer has kept the exact vehicle name under wraps, automotive industry indications point toward two primary global contenders for the Indian market: Sealion 6 DM-i (pictured above) and Atto 2 DM-i. The former is a large SUV, while the latter is a Creta-sized compact SUV.

The introduction of this plug-in hybrid technology comes at a pivotal time for the Indian premium vehicle space. By providing a product that behaves like an EV for urban commutes but offers the flexibility of conventional refueling for highway trips, BYD hopes to bridge the gap for buyers who remain hesitant to commit to EVs due to infrastructure limitations.
