Google’s Android Automotive is going open source. It will offer carmakers massive flexibility and cost savings through customisation, but risks fragmentation and requires manufacturers to handle complex security independently.

Google is officially moving Android Automotive OS (AAOS) further into the open source domain. By integrating it deeply into the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Google is offering car manufacturers the flexibility to build the next generation of software-defined vehicles without being tethered to a single proprietary ecosystem.

Pros of Open Source Android Automotive

Better Branding: Automakers can strip away the "Google look" and customise a unique, branded interface from the ground up.

Cost Efficiency: Using a free, open source base reduces heavy licensing fees and eliminates the need to build a kernel from scratch.

Massive Talent Pool: Millions of developers already know how to code for Android, making it easy to find experts to build in-car apps.

Faster Innovation: The community-driven nature of AOSP allows for faster bug fixes and the organisation of new features across the industry.

Cons of Open Source Android Automotive

No Google by Default: The open source version lacks Google Maps, Assistant, and the Play Store; getting these requires a separate, paid licence for Google Automotive Services (GAS).

Fragmentation: Just like Android phones, different car brands will update at different speeds, leading to inconsistent security and feature sets.

Security Risks: An open codebase is visible to everyone, including bad actors who may analyse and look for vulnerabilities in the vehicle’s core systems.

In short, making Android Automotive open source is a strategic move to dominate the "brain" of the car. While it gives manufacturers the freedom to innovate and save on costs, it shifts the heavy lifting of security, maintenance, and app ecosystem optimisation directly onto their shoulders.
