Hero Motocorp has confirmed that it will unveil a motorcycle designed to run on E100 fuel, which it says will be the first in India. The news comes as Indian motorists deal with multiple fuel price hikes in quick succession over the past several days, and as government officials make moves to speed up India’s transition to blended fuel in order to reduce dependence on foreign oil exports.

The unnamed Hero bike will be showcased at an event in New Delhi on June 3 with the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, and the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in attendance. Further details such as price, availability and performance figures will likely be announced at the event.

Flex fuel implies a variable blend of ethanol additives to regular petrol. India currently mandates E20, or 20 percent ethanol content in petrol sold at fuel pumps across the country. The government’s move to make E20 the minimum blend and discontinue non-blended petrol in August last year met with protests due to lower mileage and additional wear and tear imposed on older vehicles not explicitly designed to handle such fuel.

The government has since then issued draft notifications for progressive moves to E27 or E30 in the near future, with intent to introduce E85 and even E100 further down the line. As its name implies, E100 is almost pure ethanol. It is not compatible with current petrol engines certified to handle E10 and E20 fuel. In addition to reducing imports and strengthening India’s agricultural sector, flex fuel is also being promoted as more eco-friendly.

The news of Hero's upcoming launch comes shortly after Minister Gadkari announced that Maruti Suzuki will introduce India’s first E100 car on June 5, which is World Environment Day.

Hero MotoCorp reported total sales of 64,68,834 vehicles in FY 2025-26, up 10 percent YoY over FY 2024-25.
