Hero Splendor has been an icon of the commuter 100cc commuter bikes in India. Recently it has gotten an update with the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 and that makes it fit to compete with the new kid on the block, the Honda Shine 100. These are the two popular choices in this segment and here’s how they stack up against each other.

The Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 starts at ₹ 82,911 (ex-showroom), while the Honda Shine 100 comes in at a more affordable ₹ 64,900 (ex-showroom). This translates to a price difference of ₹ 18,011, making the Honda Shine 100 a considerably more budget-friendly option. But here we are talking about the top-of-the-line variant of the Hero Splendor. The base model of the Splendor starts at  ₹75,441 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Honda Shine 100 has a curvier and more modern design aesthetic. It features a sculpted fuel tank, sleek side panels, and a stylish headlight design. This gives the Honda Shine 100 a contemporary look that might appeal to riders who prefer a more modern appearance.

The Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0, on the other hand, stays true to its classic lines. However, it refreshes its age-old design with a touch of modern flair. The use of trendy matte colour options, like black or grey, injects a dose of style that might resonate more with younger riders seeking a stylish everyday companion.

Features

This is where the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 shines (pun intended). It has Bluetooth connectivity, a fully digital instrument cluster, and a USB charger, making it a tech-savvy commuter's dream. The Honda Shine, on the other hand, likely features basic instrumentation. The ₹18,000 that you pay is for these features that you get on the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0.

Both motorcycles pack a 100cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine. The Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 has a slight edge in power making 7.9 bhp whereas the Honda Shine 100 makes 7.2 bhp. Both these commuters deliver a similar torque of 8 Nm. The Honda Shine 100, however, might win on fuel efficiency with its claimed 68 kmpl compared to the Hero Splendor's 60 kmpl. This also is given to the fact that the Honda Shine’s engine is developed keeping emission norms in mind whereas the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0’s engine has just been adapted for the current emission norms. Also, the cylinder placement on the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 is sloped which is a unique thing to be seen.

The Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 has a double cradle frame. It's a proven design known for its balance of comfort and handling. The Honda Shine 100, on the other hand, has a brand-new diamond frame specifically designed for this motorcycle. This diamond frame promises increased rigidity and stability for a more confident ride. Both the Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 and Honda Shine 100 rely on a telescopic front fork and dual rear shocks to complete suspension duties. This is basic suspension which does the job while being low maintenance. Both the bikes' suspension have been tuned for ruggedness and comfort.

The Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 and Honda Shine 100 take different approaches with wheels and brakes. The  Hero Splendor Plus Xtec 2.0 has larger 18-inch wheels at both front and rear. This translates to a potentially smoother ride over rough roads and better handling on uneven terrain. However, these also result in a taller seat height. The Honda Shine 100, on the other hand, uses smaller 17-inch wheels for both axles. This offers a sharper handling feel and potentially better fuel efficiency.  Both bikes rely on drum brakes for stopping power and to keep costs under check.
