The modular architecture will underpin one electric and one plug-in hybrid model due by FY27, as the carmaker widens its new-energy lineup.

JSW MG Motor India on Wednesday unveiled ADAPT, a new modular vehicle architecture designed to support electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender powertrains on a single platform. The company said in Gurugram that one EV and one PHEV built on ADAPT would arrive by FY 2026-27, marking its first showing since the announcement.

The platform, whose name stands for Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology, is central to how JSW MG intends to expand its new-energy vehicle range without running separate engineering programmes for each powertrain type. Rather than developing distinct underpinnings for battery-electric, hybrid and range-extender models, the company can now use one architecture and vary the propulsion system depending on the vehicle and market segment.

At the core of ADAPT is what MG calls a dedicated hybrid engine and dedicated battery system, paired with an electric drive unit the company describes as the first 10-in-1 unit developed in India, integrating multiple components into a single compact assembly. It is complemented by what MG claims is the world's first electromagnetic dedicated hybrid transmission. An intelligent energy management system switches automatically between four drive modes — pure electric for urban driving, series hybrid, parallel hybrid for stronger performance, and engine-direct drive for highway cruising — selecting whichever suits driving conditions.

The platform also accommodates range-extender electric vehicle technology, in which the electric motor always drives the wheels while a petrol engine functions purely as a generator to top up the battery. MG said this configuration was intended to deliver an electric driving character while easing concerns over range on longer trips, a persistent friction point for EV buyers in India given patchy charging infrastructure outside major cities.

"At JSW MG Motor India, we believe the future of mobility lies in giving customers the freedom to choose the energy solution that best suits their lifestyle, without compromising on performance, efficiency or driving experience," said Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director, JSW MG Motor India.

The unveiling comes as Indian carmakers increasingly hedge their electrification bets rather than committing solely to battery-electric vehicles. With EV penetration in passenger vehicles still in single digits nationally and charging infrastructure concentrated in metros, hybrids and range-extenders have emerged as a bridge technology that automakers see as commercially safer while battery costs and charging networks mature. Platforms flexible enough to house multiple powertrain types, rather than dedicated EV-only architectures, allow manufacturers to adjust production mix quickly in response to shifting demand and policy incentives.

For JSW MG, a joint venture between SAIC Motor and JSW Group formed in 2023, ADAPT represents a shift from importing electrified technology to building an in-house technical foundation for future models. The company has previously introduced the ZS EV and, more recently, the Windsor EV in India. Details of the specific models to be built on ADAPT, along with pricing and range figures, are expected closer to launch.
