Microsoft has formed a partnership with the Indian startup Sarvam AI to work on the development of voice-based generative AI technologies, a move announced during Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's recent visit to India. The collaboration marks an effort by the tech giant to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, specifically through enhancements to its Microsoft co-pilot feature with OpenAI's underlying models.

In tandem with this partnership, Nadella disclosed Microsoft's plans to train 2 million Indians in AI technologies by 2025. Sarvam AI's role in this initiative will focus on leveraging Microsoft's cloud computing resources and the Azure OpenAI service to develop AI models that cater to the linguistic diversity found across India.
Emerging from AI4Bharat, a research initiative at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Sarvam AI has gained attention for its innovative approach to generative AI within the context of Indian languages. This focus secured the startup a $41 million Series A funding from investors including Lightspeed Ventures Partners, Peak XV Partners, and Khosla Ventures.
With this partnership, Sarvam AI joins the ranks of Indian startups like Krutrim and QxAI, which are dedicated to advancing generative AI technology for Indian languages.
