Volkswagen India now exports its vehicles to 50 countries globally
Volkswagen India has always targeted the global market with India-made cars. It started with the Polo and Vento being exported from the country. The export story began in 2011, with more than 6000 units of the Vento being exported to the South African market. Since then VW has tapped markets like South America, Central America, Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean region.

But the big boost came from the MQB-A0 IN based Taigun and Virtus. The company expanded to exporting to 50 countries now (35 in 2016, 44 in 2022) and the demand for both the SUV and sedan is rising. New markets are showing a lot of interest.

In an exclusive conversation with Acko Drive, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, said, “There are lot of markets which are getting interested in these cars (Virtus and Taigun) and in the last one year there has been interest from our neighbouring markets you know like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan but you will be surprised that I have been approached by markets like Guatemala as well. People from these markets have seen these cars on the roads in the countries they have visited and also in our global forums. We have showcased the Taigun as a global SUV and the Virtus as a global sedan and hence there’s a lot of interest for these made-in-India products and I can I think that only helps our business model.”
What also goes in the favour of the Taigun and the Virtus is that both cars have received a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP, making them one of the safest cars out there. No wonder then that the demand for the car in other markets is increasing. However, sales in the domestic market have not soared, they are steady and selling between 3000-4000 units of the car every month. There is a certain dip, but VW is launching some action models of both the cars, which will keep up the interest of consumers and likely witness a spike in sales.
