Bengaluru-based EV manufacturer, River, has announced its plans to further expand its footprint in the country by opening 25 new showrooms by March, 2025. Currently, River’s retail services are primarily limited to South India, with six showrooms in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hubli, Hyderabad, Vizag, and Kochi. The upcoming showrooms will see it expand into new markets including in Mysuru, Tirupati, Ahmedabad, Pune, Nagpur and Delhi. But before that, River will set up shops soon in Vellore, Erode, and Tiruppur.
This expansion plan comes shortly after River updated its sole offering, the Indie electric scooter, last year. As part of the update, River changed the belt drive system to a chain drive system, which also brought to the fore a new single-speed gearbox. Along with that, River also introduced a few new colour options for a more funky, yet premium appeal.
The River Indie is one of the biggest electric scooters in the country, which is characterised by its unique rugged body design. Fondly known as the “SUV of scooters” the large proportions of the River Indie help its case with a massive boot space of 43 litres, coupled with 12 litres of additional space available in the glove box, there’s 55 litres of storage space available on board. The River Indie is powered by a 4 kWh battery that takes 5 hours to charge from 0-80 per cent and can do 161 km of IDC range on a single charge. The battery powers a 9 bhp electric motor that is capable of producing 26 Nm of peak torque – which is good enough to accelerate from 0-40 kmph in 3.7 seconds, claims River. Post the updates, River had to increase the price of the Indie to ₹1.43 lakh (ex-showroom, Bengaluru).
The River Indie is a nice, practical scooter for anyone who wants a non-compromised, utilitarian two-wheeler for daily use. Its competitors, which include the Ather 450X, Ola S1 Pro, Bajaj Chetak 35 series, and TVS iQube, might be quicker, look premium, and boast slightly more features. But when it comes to being practical, none can match the credentials of the River Indie.
