With the relaunch of the Superb, the executive sedan segment in India has two models.
Skoda Auto India relaunched the Superb in India making it the latest addition to the executive sedan segment in India. The other executive sedan on sale in India is the Toyota Camry hybrid. While the Superb will be available in India in limited numbers, the Camry is not. Let’s compare how the Czech sedan compares to the Japanese sedan on paper.
Dimensions | Skoda Superb | Toyota Camry |
---|---|---|
Length | 4869 mm | 4885 mm |
Width | 1864 mm | 1840 mm |
Height | 1503 mm | 1455 mm |
Wheelbase | 2836 mm | 2825 mm |
Fuel Tank | 66-litres | 50-litres |
Kerb Weight | 1565 kg | 1665 kg |
The Camry is 16 mm longer than the Superb but its wheelbase is 11 mm shorter than the Superb. The longer wheelbase, at least on paper, should help the Superb have more leg space for the passengers. The Superb is also wider and taller than the Camry by 24 mm and 48 mm, respectively.
The Superb’s 66-litre fuel tank is significantly larger than the 50-litre fuel tank in the Camry. However, the Camry will be more fuel efficient as it is a strong-hybrid vehicle. Furthermore, the Superb is also 100 kg lighter than the Camry as it doesn’t house the hybrid powertrain and batteries.
Powertrain | Skoda Superb | Toyota Camry |
---|---|---|
Type | 4 cyl turbo-petrol | 4 cyl strong hybrid |
Displacement | 1984 cc | 2487 cc |
Power | 188 bhp | 215 bhp (combined) |
Torque | 320 Nm | 221 Nm (engine)/ 202 Nm (electric motor) |
Gearbox | 7-speed dual-clutch automatic | e-CVT |
Both, the Superb and the Camry get a four-cylinder engine. While the Superb gets a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, the Camry gets a 2.5-litre petrol engine with strong hybrid assist. The Camry is also the more powerful of the two a combined 215 bhp from its engine and electric motors. The Superb produces 320 Nm, but the combined torque figure of the Camry is not available as it is a strong hybrid. Furthermore, the Camry gets an e-CVT (automatic) and the Superb gets Skoda’s venerable 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
| Skoda Superb | Toyota Camry |
---|---|---|
Price (ex-showroom, India) | ₹54 lakh | ₹46.17 lakh |
The Superb is available in the top-spec Laurin & Klement variant and is priced at ₹54 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The Camry also comes in a single, fully-loaded variant and is priced at ₹46.17 lakh (ex-showroom, India). As the Superb is being offered as a completely built unit (CBU), it is nearly ₹8 lakh dearer than the Camry.
