Tata’s first electric coupe-SUV is undoubtedly feature-loaded, but how does it fare over its rivals?
After several speculations and spy shots, Tata Motors launched its first electric coupe-SUV, the Curvv.ev. Currently, the brand’s flagship electric SUV, the all-new Tata Curvv.ev is based on the scalable Acti.ev platform that Tata debuted with the Punch.ev earlier this year. Thereby, with a bigger size, the Tata Curvv.ev enters the electric compact SUV segment, with the MG ZS EV and the BYD Atto 3 as its only competition. So, how does the new Tata Curvv.ev fare against this competition? Let’s find out.
The Tata Curvv.ev has been launched with two battery packs – 55 kWh and 45 kWh. The corresponding electric motors with these battery packs include 165 bhp and 147.5 bhp, both good for 2500 Nm of torque at the shaft, but the final torque on the ground is 215 Nm. In comparison, the BYD Atto 3 packs a bigger battery pack, paired with a more powerful electric motor, while the MG ZS EV gets a slightly smaller battery pack paired with a more powerful electric motor than the Curvv.ev.
Therefore, despite the range advantage, the Tata Curvv.ev loses the performance edge compared to its competition.
Specifications | Tata Curvv.ev | BYD Atto 3 | MG ZS EV |
---|---|---|---|
Battery | 55 kWh/ 45 kWh | 60.46 kWh | 50.3 kWh |
Electric Motor | 165 kW/ 147.5 bhp | 201 bhp | 173 bhp |
Torque | 215 Nm | 310 Nm | 280 Nm |
Range (Claimed) | 585 km | 521 km | 461 km |
Specifications | Tata Curvv.ev | BYD Atto 3 | MG ZS EV |
0-100 kmph | 8.6 seconds | 7.3 seconds | 8.5 seconds |
Charger AC/ DC | 7.2 kW/ 70 kW | 7.2 kW/ 80 kW | 7.4 kW/ 50 kW |
Charging Time (10-80 per cent) | 7.9 hours/ 40 mins | 9.5 hours/ 50 mins | 9 hours/ 60 mins |
As you can gauge from the above, the Tata Curvv.ev is significantly slower than the BYD Atto 3 and even more so than the MG ZS EV when it comes to 0-100 kmph acceleration. However, credit Tata, for it takes the least time to charge its battery, whether it's the 55 kWh unit or the 45 kWh unit, for both its AC and DC charger options. The MG ZS EV takes the longest to charge its batteries at 1 hour even after using a 50 kW DC charger (the least powerful charger here), preceded by the BYD Atto 3.

Wheelbase | 2560 mm | 2720 mm | 2549 mm |
Ground Clearance | 190 mm/ 186 mm | 175 mm | 171 mm |
Boot Space | 500 litres | 440 litres | 448 litres |
Kerb Weight | NA | 1750 kg | NA |
The reason behind the Tata Curvv. EV’s slow acceleration prowess can be due to its weight. However, Tata hasn’t revealed the SUV’s unladen/ laden kerb weight, so we can’t pinpoint it. As far as its dimensions are concerned, the Curvv.ev's compact proportion makes it smaller than the MG ZS EV. Despite its coupe styling, it still measures 1 mm taller than the MG ZS EV. However, its 500-litre boot space is the largest in the segment, and what makes it all the more interesting is that with a 60:40 split seat ratio, this space can be expanded up to almost 1000-litre. Additionally, there’s also a small frunk under the hood of 11.6-litre.
On the other hand, with all the seats up, the BYD Atto 3 might have less boot space at 440 litres in comparison, but with the second row completely down, the Chinese-made SUV ends up with a cavernous 1340 litres of storage space. So, while Tata has done a good job with the new Curvv, the EV could have done better by having a spacious interior and pushing the envelope further.
Tata has loaded the Curvv.ev with features from the base Creative trim. For starters, features like the electric tailgate, V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) and V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) charging capabilities, cruise control, electric ORVMS, reverse parking assist, LED headlamps, and even an Air Purifier are already available. While the entry-level Creative gets a smaller 7-inch infotainment screen and a TFT instrument cluster, the top variants come with a bigger 10-inch infotainment screen and digital cockpit.
In addition to that, further down the trim line-up, Tata has also equipped the Curvv.ev with Level 2 ADAS, a 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof, auto headlamps, ventilated seats and Tata’s Arcade.ev app suite are also available with the Curvv.ev. So, to put it in short, there is no dearth of features with the Curvv.ev here.
The BYD Atto 3, on the other hand, is quite a posh offering and that 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen is one of the biggest centre-piece of the SUV. Additionally, while its cabin might come with all the essential features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 6-power adjustable driver's seat, and a 4-way power adjustable passenger’s seat, the BYD Atto 3 is also available with ADAS functionalities.
The MG ZS EV is available with ADAS functionalities, and it gets a bigger 10.11-inch infotainment screen as standard, a 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat, and more. However, there are no ventilated seat options here, and its standard infotainment system is not as interactive as Tata’s Arcade.ev, which does dampen the in-car experience a bit.
| Tata Curvv.ev | BYD Atto 3 | MG ZS EV |
---|---|---|---|
Price | ₹17.49-₹21.99 lakh | ₹24.99- ₹33.99 lakh | ₹18.98-₹25.43 lakh |
With the new Curvv.EV, Tata Motors has dropped its gauntlet into the electric compact SUV segment that sounds good on paper and looks even better in person. Moreover, with a price range between ₹17.49-₹21.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the Tata Curvv.ev is quite competitively priced, especially with the kind of features it comes packed with. The MG ZS EV, does come close to the Curvv.ev. However, it doesn’t feel as posh. Meanwhile, the BYD Atto 3 simply feels overpriced at this point despite being feature-loaded.
