Volkswagen India has reached a notable milestone with its Virtus sedan, selling 50,000 units since its launch in 2022. This achievement reflects the brand's growing foothold in the compact sedan segment, particularly in the sub-₹20 lakh price range. The Virtus has managed to secure over 17,000 unit sales in 2024 alone, highlighting its consistent demand in the Indian automotive market.
The Volkswagen Virtus is offered at a starting ex-showroom price of ₹11.56 lakh and is available in multiple variants to cater to a broad customer base. In 2024, Volkswagen introduced two new variants, the GT Line and GT Plus Sport, which aim to attract a wider audience by offering sportier aesthetics and enhanced performance features. These additions have helped the Virtus stay competitive in a segment that faces stiff competition from established models.
The Volkswagen Virtus comes with two engine options. A 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine is paired with two transmission options — a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic torque converter offering a balance between performance and fuel efficiency, making it a popular choice for city driving. The 1.5-litre TSI petrol, the more powerful of the two, is available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The 1.5-litre TSI option appeals to enthusiasts looking for a more dynamic driving experience, with the DCT variant being particularly well-suited for performance-focused buyers.
The Volkswagen Virtus competes directly with other popular models in the Indian compact sedan market, including the Hyundai Verna and the Skoda Slavia. The Hyundai Verna has reported strong sales in the FY24 period, selling over 30,000 units, averaging approximately 2,502 units per month. This accounts for a significant 30.80 per cent market share in the compact sedan segment, showcasing its dominance. 
Another key competitor, the Skoda Slavia, also hit the 50,000-unit sales milestone earlier this year, just like the Virtus, since its 2022 launch. The Slavia shares its platform with the Virtus, both being built on Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0-IN architecture.
