The Tata Tiago is a compact hatchback with a sporty exterior design and upmarket interior. Despite being an entry-level offering, the Tiago offers a premium experience. The exterior of the Tiago sports an aggressive design which is reminiscent of its elder sibling Altroz. The sharp front end, well-proportioned side profile and simple rear fascia make it a good-looking hatchback. It is also one of the safest cars in India, with an impressive 4-star safety rating from Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program).
The Tata Tiago is available with only a 1.2-litre petrol engine. It is mated to a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT transmission. It is also available in the CNG fuel variant. The engine offers the adequate performance needed for daily jaunts. The solid build quality, practical interior, sporty exterior and good performance make it an ideal choice for a first-time car buyer. Moreover, the affordable price tag makes it a value-for-money car, but it offers an upmarket experience when you get behind the wheel or hop into the passenger seat.
The following sections throw light on the exterior design, interior, features, performance and safety.
The Tiago is a handsome hatchback. The front end features a sharp front grille with a prominent chrome strip. The headlamps are sharply designed, and the top-spec variant gets projector headlamps, LED DRLs and a tri-arrow motif. The aggressively designed front bumper further enhances the sporty appeal of the front fascia. The Tiago looks sharp, sporty and aggressive when viewed from the front.
The Tiago's side profile is much simpler than the front fascia. The top-spec variant gets stylish alloy wheels and chrome treatment for the door handles. There's also a prominent shoulder line which extends to the tail light cluster. When viewed from the side, the Tiago looks well-proportioned, and the design suits the car's overall character.
The Tiago's rear profile looks mature and relatively simple. The boot lid gets a chrome strip, and the Tiago badging takes centre stage. The sporty rear spoiler makes it look sharp, and the high-stop lamp adds to the premium touch. Overall, the hatchback looks way more premium than the price it demands, and that's the highlight of the Tiago. Also, Tiago's compact dimensions make it an easy-to-drive hatchback.
The Tiago’s interior design is simple, practical and clutter-free. The dashboard is neatly laid out, and the dual-tone theme adds to the flair. The prominent highlights of the interior include a large infotainment display, a flat-bottom steering wheel, chrome accents around the AC vents and updated seat upholstery. Overall, the interior is feature-rich, comfortable and practical. Tata Motors has also done a good job in terms of fit, finish, and overall build quality.
The seats are well cushioned; the driver seat also gets a height adjustment function. And the rear bench seat is also comfortable and ideal for two occupants. Three passengers may feel cramped, and it is best suited for only short city drives. The rear seat misses out on adjustable headrests. Tiago’s boot space stands at 242 litres, which is ideal for even long drives.
The Tiago gets a relatively long list of features considering it is an entry-level offering. The top-spec variant comes loaded with features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, an 8-speaker audio system, automatic climate control, a digital instrument cluster, a cooled glovebox, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, etc. All-in-all, the Tiago is a feature-loaded hatchback considering the price it demands.
The Tiago draws power from a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that produces 84.8 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. With the CNG fuel, the same engine churns out a bit less power which stands at 72.3 bhp and 95 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The CNG variant is available with only manual transmission.
The petrol engine delivers more than enough power for the usual daily jaunts. The CNG variant produces a tad less power than the petrol model. The only downside of the petrol engine is its refinement. The engine clutter is a bit too much and can creep into the cabin as well. Otherwise, the overall performance is good in terms of an entry-level hatchback.
The manual petrol variant of the hatchback delivers a mileage of 19.01 kmpl, and the AMT model returns a fuel economy of 19 kmpl. The CNG variant can travel a distance of 26.49 km on a kg of CNG. Please note that the mileage figures are based on the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) rating. With Tata Tiago’s 35 litre fuel tank capacity, you can get a good full tank range.
The standard safety features of the Tiago include dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, Corner Stability Control, front seatbelt reminder and rear parking sensors. The top-spec variants get additional equipment such as a rear parking camera, TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), day/night IRVM (Inside Rear View Mirror), rear defogger, etc. Another main highlight of the Tiago is its build quality. It is the only compact hatchback in India to score a 4-star safety rating in the G-NCAP crash tests.
