What Is a Learning license?

Learning license is a document issued to those who wish to learn how to drive a vehicle in India. The validity of this document is of six months, however, the RTO expects you to apply for a driving license after 30 days of issuing a learning license, as this is the minimum time to learn how to drive. The minimum age limit of the applicant is from 16 to 18 years depending on the type of driving license they wish to apply for.

Learning License Test Slot

The application for a learning license can be made via online i.e. through the RTO website or via offline mode i.e. by personally visiting the RTO. When an application for learner’s license is made, the applicant is asked to book a slot for a Learning License Test. This is an online test; however, one can also request an oral exam.

What Is Asked in RTO Online Learning License Exam?

In RTO Learning License test, questions related to rules and regulations of driving a vehicle, duties of a driver, precaution, documents required to be carried, etc. are asked. The test is in the multiple choice question format, where you need to choose the correct answer from three to four options. Some questions include images which are mostly related to the identification of road signs.

You will be taken to RTO’s computer lab at the time of your test slot. Here you will appear for the online learning license test. You will find a lot of practice tests on the internet. Practice as much as possible before appearing for the actual exam.

One can easily pass this test with a basic knowledge of the given syllabus. If not, some RTO’s allow the applicant to reappear from the very next day, while some require a seven-day cool off period after which the applicant can reappear for the test and obtain the learner’s license.

Documents Required for Learning License

You can apply for a learning license in two ways: online and offline. In both the ways you will require the following set of documents:

  1. Form 1 (physical fitness declaration)

  2. Form 1 A (Medical certificate by certified doctor, for commercial license and if applicant’s age is above 50 years)

  3. Form No. 2

  4. Address proof

  5. Age Proof

  6. Multiple passport-size photographs

If you are applying for the learning license online, you need to first download the required forms, fill them and upload the same. Upload the scanned copies of all the above-mentioned documents on the RTO website as well.

How to Apply for Driving License?

To apply for a driving license, visit the nearest RTO or create an account on the RTO website. The application process requires complete submission of documents and payment of application fees. After this, the applicant can appear for a practical driving test. This test involves the applicant driving a vehicle in front of the examiner, who will test your skills.

An application for a driving license can be made after 30 days of issuance of learning license. One is supposed to undergo formal training for driving within these 30 days.

You will need the following documents to apply for a driving license:

  1. Original Learning License

  2. Form 4

  3. Age Proof

  4. Address Proof

  5. Passport size photographs

  6. Driving school certificate (for transport vehicle licenses)

The Bottom Line
