Here’s a list of popular festivals in Gujarat.
Navratri: This is by far the most famous festival in the state of Gujarat. This 10-day festival is celebrated in other Indian states as well. Navratri is often celebrated in October. People wear traditional attires and gather in huge grounds with friends and family to play Dandiya. They perform the Garba and worship Goddess Durga.
Rann Utsav: This festival is celebrated in Kutch. During this festival, a section of the white desert is converted into a funfair. Tourists can spend a few nights in the tents and experience the culture of Kutch, along with visiting nearby tourist destinations. There’s food, performances, and a festive atmosphere during the festival, which is active from November to February.
Shamlaji Melo: This festival is celebrated around the Shamlaji temple. It is like a fair celebrated usually in November. The festival is also known as Kartik Purnima Fair, the celebrations begin on the day of Kartik Purnima. People come on foot and carts driven by camels for the festival. They sing devotional songs and bathe in the Meshow river.
Janmashtami: This festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Janmashtami is celebrated in Gujarat and other Indian states with great excitement. The festival is famous for the Dahi Handi ceremony where skilful members of a mandal form human pyramids and break a Dahi Handi tied at a considerable height. This festival is usually celebrated in August.
Uttarayan: This festival is also known as Makar Sankranti or the Kite Festival. This marks the beginning of the harvest season. People get together to fly kites from the top of their houses. Ahmedabad and Surat are the hubs for this festival; however, it is celebrated throughout Gujarat.
