Festivals Observed in Jammu and Kashmir:
From enchanting valleys and lakes to panoramic landscapes, Jammu and Kashmir will certainly leave you spellbound. The provinces of Jammu and Kashmir are different due to varied culture and traditions. Jammu is predominantly populated by the Hindu community, while Kashmir is dominated by the Muslim community. Below are some of the popular festivals celebrated in the state of Jammu and Kashmir:
Baisakhi: The large population of the Sikh community in Jammu celebrates Baisakhi which marks the beginning of the new year. Celebrated during the month of April, Baisakhi also denotes the start of the harvesting season. The festival also commemorates the formation of Khalsa Panth of Guru Gobind Singh’s warriors in 1699. During the festival, Gurudwaras are decorated and kirtans are held.
Tulip Festival: During the spring season, Tulips across the state, especially in Kashmir, flourishes abundantly and the sight is indeed mesmerising. Srinagar comes alive during the festival since it is considered that the city holds the largest Tulip Garden in Asia. You can witness a variety of Tulip flowers along with local handlooms, cuisine and cultural programs during the festival.
Shikara Festival: The Dal Lake in Srinagar is indeed a sight to behold. And the lifeline to Dal Lake are the Shikaras. Shikaras are a unique type of boats used especially by Kashmiris in the Dal Lake for tourists visiting the lake. During the Shikara festival, these boats are decorated with colourful paints. You can witness the Shikara Boat Race and the Dragon Boat Race. Several activities are organised to showcase the art and culture of Kashmir.
Gurez Festival: Gurez is located about 120kms from Kashmir with an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. The placid valley in the Himalayas comes alive during the Gurez festival. People of Gurez come together during this annual festival to showcase their talents in handicrafts, culture and local cuisine.
