Festivals and Important Days in Nagaland:

Nagaland is fondly called as the ‘land of festivals’. The state is home to several tribes who have their unique culture and traditions. Most of these festivals in Nagaland are rich in culture, art and traditions which are translated in the form of dance and art. Below are some of the popular festivals celebrated in Nagaland:

Hornbill Festival: The Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is an initiative of the government to encourage inter-tribal interaction. Celebrated on December annually, the festival is held at the Naga Heritage Village about 12kms from the city of Kohima. The main attraction of the Hornbill festival is the dance and songs by the Naga tribes dressed in their incredible traditional dress and headgear. There are handicraft shops, food stalls, events like traditional archery, Naga wrestling, among others.

Aoling Festival: Aoling festival is the spring festival of Nagaland. The six-day long festival is celebrated by the Konyaks tribe of the Nagas. The festival begins upon the end of sowing their agricultural land. While the tribe prepares for the celebration of the festival on the first day, the remaining days are left only to participate in the day-long festivities. On the last day, they clean the house and village before the festival comes to an end.

Sekrenyi Festival: The Angami tribe of Nagaland celebrate the Sekrenyi festival in February and the festivities go for ten days. Also referred to as the Phousnyi, the festival witnesses several rituals. The tribe of Angami perform their unique dance and other art forms to reflect their culture and traditions.

Moatsu Festival: The three-day festival is celebrated by the Ao tribe during the month of May. After a hard days labour in their fields, the Ao tribe celebrate with several cultural activities.

Tuluni Festival: Tuluni festival is the most important festival of the Semas tribe of Nagaland. Held during the month of July, outsiders are not allowed inside the village on the first day of the festivities. On the fourth day, the tribe pray to Litsaba for life and protection of crops.

Metemneo Festival: The Metemneo festival is celebrated by the Yimchunger tribe of Nagaland after the harvest of the millet crop. During the five-day festival, the tribe prays for the departed souls while young boys and girls get engaged.

Amongmong Festival: During the first week of September, the Sangtam tribe celebrate the Amongmong festival when it’s time for harvest. The God of the House is worshipped during this festival as well as the three cooking stones in the fireplace.
