The Skoda Kushaq was launched in June 2021
Skoda Auto India has manufactured 63,900 units of the Kushaq since its launch in 2021. In two years, the company has made significant progress in the sales of the vehicle as well and it has been one of its top performers in the country. The Slavia compact sedan and the Kushaq SUV have really helped drive sales for the company in India and with some new variants and special editions expected just ahead of the festive season, sales will spike again.
India is just one of the countries where SUVs are produced, the others include Czech Republic, China, Ukraine and Slovakia. The Kushaq, however, will soon make its way to export markets as well and come 2024, it is heading to Vietnam where it will be assembled. This is a first for The Skoda VW group, where parts of the car will be sent from India and assembled in Vietnam. The Kushaq has been selling in strong numbers in the country and has averaged around 4300 units a month propelling the overall sales numbers to cross the 50,000 mark just last year.
The Kushaq has certainly set the tone for the company's fortunes in India as also its target of achieving a larger share in the market. While Skoda and VW are targeting a market share of 5 per cent and that looks to be very achievable. Skoda Auto India's contribution to the global sales, however, has increased drastically in 2022 compared to 2021. India contributes to 7 per cent of the company's global sales and with more models coming in, that number will surely go up.
Skoda plans to introduce an SUV in the subcompact category as well by 2024, and that will propel sales further given how well that segment is doing not just in India but globally as well.
