Manufacturers have shifted focus from fuel-efficient vehicles to ones with a low carbon footprint.
Automakers have changed focus somewhat. From making only fuel-efficient vehicles to also producing ones with a low carbon footprint. One way to go about doing that is by producing cars with factory-fitted CNG. Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Hyundai have been pioneers in this segment, driving innovation as well as sales. But what if you have a budget under 7 lakh rupees and are looking to buy a CNG car, are there any options for you? We have collated a list of 5.
Price: ₹5.74 - 5.96 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
Let’s start this list with one of India’s most popular models, the Alto K10. It is available in two trims LXi and VXi and only gets a 1.0-litre engine with 56 bhp and 82 Nm. The Alto K10 CNG has a fuel efficiency of 33.40 km/kg. While the Alto K10 gets a 7-inch touchscreen, it’s not available on the CNG trims, unfortunately. However, it gets Maruti’s SmartPlay Dock – an app that turns your phone into an infotainment system.
Price: ₹5.92 - 6.11 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
The dominance of Maruti Suzuki in the CNG space is quite clear as the next car is the S Presso and it too also available in two trims - LXi and VXi. It has a 1.0-litre engine with 56 bhp and 82 Nm, and Maruti Suzuki claims the S Presso CNG has a fuel efficiency of 32.73 km/kg. Like the Alto K10, the S Presso also gets the SmartPlay Dock on the CNG variants and comes with only two airbags.
Price: ₹6.45 - 6.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
You cannot leave the Wagon R out of this list and yes it comes at number three. while the petrol-powered Wagon R gets two engine options, the CNG kit is only available with the smaller 1.0-litre engine with 56 bhp and 82 Nm, Surprisingly, it is the most efficient car in this list yet, returning 34.05 km/kg. The Wagon R CNG misses out on basic features like a tachometer, touchscreen, rear wiper-washer and steering-mounted controls.
Price: ₹6.60 - 8.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
Breaking away from Maruti Suzukis, we have the only CNG car to get an automatic gearbox, the Tata Tiago. It also gets Tata Motors patented twin-cylinder tech, which does not compromise on the space in the boot. Under the hood is a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 72 bhp and 95 Nm, and along with that automatic, it also gets a manual gearbox. The Tiago has a fuel efficiency of 28.06 km/kg. The CNG kit on the Tiago is available in almost all variants so it comes loaded with features like a digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen, automatic AC and more.
Price: ₹6.75 lakh (ex-showroom, India)
Maruti also has the Celerio CNG, but that is available in only one trim - VXi - and it gets the same engine as the other Maruti Suzuki’s in this list – a 1-litre petrol unit with 56 bhp and 82 Nm – and Maruti Suzuki claims the Celerio returns 34.43 km/kg, making it the most fuel-efficient CNG vehicle on this list. However, Maruti skips on some features like a touchscreen infotainment system, a tachometer, keyless entry and the like.
We know the list is Maruti Suzuki-dominated, but then again, it’s about you getting the right information to make an informed choice. So which one fits your budget? Let us know in the comment section below and if you have any queries, reach out to us on our social media handles as well.
