Tata Motors Halts Sanand Production as Gujarat Floods Disrupt Tiago, Nexon Output

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited (TMPV) informed stock exchanges on Sunday evening that operations at its Sanand plants in Gujarat, along with those of several suppliers in the region, have been severely disrupted by flooding after days of intense rainfall. The Sanand facility manufactures the Tiago, Tigor, Nexon and Sierra — four of the company's highest-volume models — making it one of TMPV's most important production hubs.

In a filing under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Regulations, signed by Company Secretary and Chief Legal Officer Maloy Kumar Gupta, the automaker said efforts were "underway to reinstate production operations at both the suppliers' facilities and the Company's plants on priority," and that it expected to restore normalcy "over the next few days." The extent of the financial damage is still being worked out; the company confirmed it holds insurance covering floods and other natural calamities, though it gave no indication of how much of any loss that policy might absorb.

The disruption follows an unusually severe spell of monsoon rain across Gujarat. Ahmedabad recorded 294.6mm of rainfall in a single day last week, its fourth-highest one-day total in a century; part of a downpour that reversed what had been a seasonal rainfall deficit within days. State authorities reported tens of thousands of people evacuated across Gujarat, and rail services between Ahmedabad and Mumbai were among the wider disruptions.

TMPV was not alone in halting operations. At least half a dozen other listed companies with plants in the Sanand-Ahmedabad belt, spanning sectors from pharmaceuticals to textiles, filed similar disclosures over the same period, underlining how concentrated India's western industrial corridor has become — and how exposed it is when the monsoon turns severe.

For Tata Motors, the timing complicates an otherwise strong run. The company's passenger vehicle sales rose 46 per cent year-on-year in the June quarter, with electric vehicle volumes more than doubling. June alone was its best month on record, driven by the Punch and Nexon, which ranked among the country's best-selling models. TMPV currently holds close to 13 per cent of the domestic passenger vehicle market, running a close contest with Mahindra & Mahindra for second place behind Maruti Suzuki, and has set out plans to lift capacity and market share considerably by the end of the decade.

A short stoppage at Sanand is unlikely to alter that trajectory materially, given the buffer typically provided by dealer inventory. But the plant's dual role in producing both combustion and newer SUV models means any prolonged outage would be felt quickly in showrooms. Attention now turns to how long the suppliers' facilities in the flood-hit region take to recover, and whether Tata Motors offers a clearer estimate of the damage when it reports its June quarter results next month.
