Hyundai

Hyundai has trademarked Hy-CNG and Hy-CNG Duo names, suggesting the tech could come soon.

Hyundai’s CNG models could soon get a twin-cylinder CNG technology as the brand has filed a trademark for Hy-CNG and Hy-CNG Duo. The trademark for the latter seems like it could be for the twin-cylinder tech as per the name, however, it could also just be for branding of its CNG models.

If the trademark is for the twin-cylinder tech, it could imply that Hyundai could become the second manufacturer in India to offer this technology. Currently, only Tata Motors offers this tech with the Tiago, Tigor, Punch and Altroz CNG models and will soon be available with the Nexon CNG. On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki has the most expansive portfolio of CNG vehicles with as many as 12 models.

Hyundai

It seems unlikely that Hyundai India will offer both single- and twin-cylinder layouts for its CNG models as there are a lot of advantages with the latter. The single-cylinder layout takes up a lot of space in the boot, which is then rectified with the twin-cylinder layout.

If Hyundai introduces this technology in India, it could be available with the Grand i10 Nios, Aura and Exter CNG models. All three get a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 68 bhp and 95 Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. It remains to be seen if more models will get the factory-fitted CNG kit.
