Planning your vacation based on public holidays and leaves will certainly help by knowing some of the important religious and cultural festivals of Chhattisgarh. Below are some of the best places and cultural festivals to visit when you are touring Chhattisgarh:

Bastar Dussehra: The Bastar Dussehra dates back to the 17th century when King Dalpat Dev began the Dussehra and encouraged local tribes to participate in the celebrations of the Bastar Dussehra. The Dussehra is celebrated in commemoration of Goddess Danteshwari and other indigenous gods of the tribes. The festival is celebrated between July and October and the last 15 days are the most significant days of the festival. One can witness the art and culture of the state of Chhattisgarh when visiting during the Bastar Dussehra.

Goncha Festival: The Goncha Festival is popularly called Chariot Festival of Chhattisgarh due to its close proximity when Hindus celebrate Rath Yatra. The biggest attraction of the festival is the mock weapon built by the indigenous tribes of the state. A pistol made of bamboo locally called tukki, and the bullet used a fruit, which is called Goncha. While this might be a weapon to hurt each other, it is part of the culture of the tribes by performing mock encounters. The festival is held during the Rath Yatra which falls during the month of July.

Bhoramdeo Mahotsav: Located about 130kms from Raipur, the Bhoramdeo Temples were built during the 13th century, by the Nag dynasty. The remarkable architecture of the temples is indeed mesmerising. During the Bhoramdeo Mahotsav, several cultural activities and showcase the state’s indigenous tribes and their traditions in the form of arts and crafts. The Mahotsav is held in the month of March and it’s sure to leave you fascinated with Chhattisgarh’s art and culture.

Champaran Mela: One of the important pilgrims in the country, the Champaran Mela celebrates Saint Vallabhacharya, the reformer of the Vallabha community. The Mela is organised between the month of January and February. People from across India participate in the Champaran Mela especially the Vaishnavas community.
