Strong domestic demand and record EV sales offset a challenging quarter for Jaguar Land Rover, hit by supply disruptions and a planned Jaguar model wind-down.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited (TMPVL), formerly Tata Motors Limited, reported consolidated revenue of ₹95,799 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 9.3 percent year-on-year, even as its British luxury arm Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) grappled with supply constraints and falling volumes. The results, announced in Mumbai on August 13, mark the company's first quarter reporting under its new corporate structure following the demerger of its commercial vehicle business.
The consolidated performance masked a sharp divergence between the group's two main businesses. JLR's revenue fell 9.6 percent to £6.0 billion, with wholesale volumes down 9.2 percent, as the company contended with a fire at a key component supplier, disruption linked to the conflict in the Middle East, and the planned phase-out of outgoing Jaguar models ahead of the launch of the Jaguar Type 01. JLR's profit before tax fell 68.9 percent to £109 million, while retail variable marketing expenses rose from 4.1 percent to 7.1 percent of revenue.
By contrast, the domestic Tata Passenger Vehicles business delivered a robust performance, with revenue climbing 64.8 percent to ₹17,930 crore on the back of 46 percent volume growth that outpaced the wider industry. Electric vehicle volumes nearly doubled, rising 112 percent year-on-year to over 34,000 units, helping the company hold a 39 percent share of India's EV market alongside an overall passenger vehicle market share of 14.3 percent, retaining its position as the country's second-largest carmaker by volume.
The domestic unit's operating performance also improved, with EBIT margin narrowing to -0.5 percent from a wider loss the previous year, aided by the launch of the updated Tiago, Tiago.ev and the new Sierra.ev, though supply constraints limited Sierra volumes during the quarter.
Group chief financial officer Dhiman Gupta said the quarter reflected continuity of the domestic growth momentum alongside preparation for "an important transition year at JLR," noting that supply constraints and elevated commodity and currency costs from the previous financial year had persisted into the first quarter.
JLR chief executive PB Balaji pointed to demand resilience despite the disruptions, highlighting four upcoming electric launches: the Range Rover Electric, Range Rover Sport Electric, Range Rover GT and Jaguar Type 01. The company also signed a memorandum of understanding with Stellantis to explore collaboration on Defender-brand products for the North American market, and began production of the CJLR Freelander at its China joint venture in late July.
Tata Motors PV managing director and chief executive Shailesh Chandra said the quarter's results underlined the strength of the company's multi-powertrain strategy, with EV, CNG and traditional fuel options collectively supporting demand across segments amid what he described as the rapid mainstreaming of electric mobility in India.
The wider numbers illustrate how India's growing appetite for electric and CNG vehicles continues to insulate domestic operations from global headwinds affecting premium exports, even as currency movements and elevated commodity costs weigh on margins across both businesses. Consolidated net debt stood at ₹42,200 crore, with free cash flow negative ₹11,800 crore, reflecting seasonal working capital movements rather than a change in underlying trend.
